Since the Canadian Prius has cruise control and
the current US version does not, what are the
issues in just buying one from a Canadian
dealer and driving it over the border?

Are there regulatory issues, and adverse tax
consequences? Would a US dealer honor the
warrantee?

I am not sure of the tax and registration issues, but their pricing may be different coupled with the exchange rate. It may not be as a good a value. Certification speaking it will pass any state req. for emissions. MPH/KM is already handled by an on-board button. The Canadian car would not be eligible for the 3 yr. roadside assistance or 3 yr/37.5K comp. maintenance. Perhaps the bigger issue is availability, production is only around 1000 for the year for that market. PM

It may not be as a good a value. <<

I doubt if any U.S. resident would want to go through the hassle of buying a Prius in Canada just to get cruise control, but here are the facts as I understand them:

MSRP is $29,900 Cdn. or about $20,600 U.S.

Provincial sales taxes are typically 6 to 8 percent. There's no PST in Alberta.

The federal goods and services tax is 7 percent. On most goods, foreign residents can apply for a GST refund. I don't know if this is the case for autos.

If I import a car from the U.S. that was not manufactured in North America, I have to pay a tariff of ~7 percent. The U.S. may have similar duties on cars imported from Canada.

In Vancouver, I'm also being charged hefty delivery and documentation fees plus more "eco" taxes on the battery and air conditioning.

As Priusman points out, availability could be a problem. Only 20 are being delivered to Vancouver in August and there is no ETA for the rest of the province.

I believe someone posted that it is not a tax credit but only a deduction from income which is a BIG difference. Could someone clarify this?

There are numerous issues why cruise was not offered at launch in the U.S. market. I will attempt to elaborate on them next week.
On the tax issue it is a deduction. I am the source, I think I posted it in message 77. I quoted the official letter which we sent to our dealers on the subject, as approved by our Tax Dept. working with the IRS and outside tax consultants. Priusman
