<<

I doubt if any U.S. resident would want to go
through the hassle of buying a Prius in Canada just to
get cruise control, but here are the facts as I
understand them:

MSRP is $29,900 Cdn. or about
$20,600 U.S.

Provincial sales taxes are typically
6 to 8 percent. There's no PST in
Alberta.

The federal goods and services tax is 7 percent. On
most goods, foreign residents can apply for a GST
refund. I don't know if this is the case for
autos.

If I import a car from the U.S. that was not
manufactured in North America, I have to pay a tariff of ~7
percent. The U.S. may have similar duties on cars imported
from Canada.

In Vancouver, I'm also being
charged hefty delivery and documentation fees plus more
"eco" taxes on the battery and air
conditioning.

As Priusman points out, availability could be a
problem. Only 20 are being delivered to Vancouver in
August and there is no ETA for the rest of the province.
