Has anyone ever purchased a car online before? What is a good site to start pricing for a new Avalon? Any ideas?

Edmunds.com would be a good start. That's the only one that comes to mind right now. Lemme get some sleep tonight and I'll try and come up with more for you.

I did it through the Toyota website. I built the car I wanted, an '07 Avalon Limited and spec'ed it the way I wanted it. Then I requested bids from three local dealerships. I got a response from one nearby dealer that had the exact car I was looking for (colors and features). He provided a bid of $34,400 for a car that stickered at $38800. I drove it home two hours later - done deal! It couldn't have been an easier transaction and I've been buying cars for 35-years.

Thats actually a kind of neat process. Did you know about it before hand, or were you just slumming around on the internet and came across it?

I have used edmunds as a research tool before. They are pretty good. As per using the dealer's site, I will do that for my next one.

I think the build your own sites are great. Not only can you find what you're looking for without wasting gas and time going to dealerships, but you get such an idea of cost too. It's one of the best things that's happened in the automotive world. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/460.gif)

I'm fairly well adept at using the web to find what I'm looking for (I'm in the IT business). Being a car junky I learned that you can build it and ask for quotes from pretty much any make. Ah - the wonders of the internet...

Yes, Edmunds is a good starting place as they are many sources on the internet. Google it and you will probably find a good list.
