it sounds to me like a fuel pump issue engine doesnt need much gas to start up but it does to run.

The cam belt could have slipped due to wear and the timing may be off. I had a 2000 Hyundai Sonata that still ran with timing being off, "check engine" light being on and I still don't know how I was able to start it back up, let alone drive it 50 miles back home after this event happened. How many miles on the car?
