2000 avalon xls : check engine light on - my service location informed me it is the internal computer ans repair at toyoyta would be in excess of $3,000. any ideas to fix or turn off check engine.

Whoever it was that told you that did you a disservice unless they pulled the error code from the computer and diagnosed a specific computer problem.

The thing is that you can get a check engine light for something as simple as not tightening your gas cap.

Go find a car parts store near you that will pull the error code for you (many will do it for free). That will give you an idea of what the real problem is and what it might take to fix it. No sense wrapping yourself around the axle unless you have to!

Service got the error codes which indicated computer problem. Codes are p1130 and p1135. Check engine light went off, but now has come back on. I don't know trhe exact code parameters. I might buy my own diagnostic checker.
Car has 139,000 plus miles, and is in top condition otherwise. I have maintained all recommended services then plus some. No other problems when the car is running.
Any suggestions.

P1130 & P1135 codes and how one guy fixed it.

On another forum I read about gas caps and their relationship to the check engine light. I had bought a locking gas cap and began getting check engine light that didn't go away. I changed back to the original cap and made sure that, every time, I click the ratchet sound at least five times. It took a couple of day and the check engine light went away and hasn't returned. It's been a couple of months now and I'm confident the gas cap not being tightened properly was the reason for the light. You might try that, even get a new Toyota gas cap, and wait a few days afterwards before spending a bunch of dough on other "solutions".

Interesting information. I am checking the sensors and the gas cap. I have to check with my service since he said specifically it was a computer. I had work on the air fuel sensor ratio, and may have put down the wrong codes that he gave me. I also have codes c1246 and c1301. Any ideas about those?

THANKS FOR THE REPLY. ACTUALLY, MY SERVICE REPAIRED THE 1130 AND 1135, AND NOT REALLY THAT EXPENSIVE - PARTS AND LABOR AROUND$300.00. THE CODES I AM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH ARE C1246 AND C1301. DO YOU HAVE ANY FEEDBACK FOR THAT.

FOUND BY GOOGLING. ONE CODE IS FAULTY MASTER CYLINDER SENSOR. THE OTHER IS CAN SOMETHING. I AM TRYING TO GET ADDITIONAL INFO.
