I was thinking of purchasing a 1998 Tacoma 4 cylinder with a 5 spd manual. Has airbag suspension in it with all top quality parts. While that may be something to worry about, my concern is more about the engine and transmission and problems that are common.

I am getting a great price on the truck, but regardless would like to be aware of things to watch out for. It has about 128k miles on the engine.

Thanks in advanced for any help you can provide, or a post you can forward me to that may have these answers.

The 22R engine is well proven. The only issue I have heard of is the cam chain guide. But I think they last till about 200k.

Yeah, the 4 banger is virtually bullet-proof, a great little engine.
