Hi. I bought my Prius on Monday, and drove it from Vermont down to NYC. It now has about 350 miles on it, and a quarter tank of its original gas.

When I picked up my car from the parking garage last night, and again this morning, I noticed that the blue thermometer icon was lit. Is that really supposed to mean that the coolant level is low, or that the car was not warmed up yet? It went off after about 5-10 minutes, at which point the heater (which was set at "auto") came on. I would think that it's a warm-up issue, but does anyone out there know for sure, or have similar experiences?

Thanks,

David

I am at work, having just driven here, and having noticed the light on again as I drove in this morning. I don't have my Owners manual with me here. I was hoping that one of you might know something or have experienced something of this nature that would help me before I got home.

Do you really think that kind of sarcasm is necessary or appropriate here?

>Did the dealer took your Owners manual away?
> It should all be explained there.
>
> Robert

I tended to agree with Robert. As great and convenient a tool the internet is - you can't fully rely on the all the answers found here.....most of the time they're reasonably accurate.....but this car, as you know, is a different animal from anything you've driven. If there ever was a car that the manual should be read its this one. It ain't the best written piece of literature around but provides alot of info and answers to both basic and obscure questions. Its worth it to take the time. Pages 5, 89 and 95 detail the dual operation of this indicator light. As you'll find out, weather - the cold will effect your mileage performance to an even greater extent than your last car; engine performance, battery performance and reduced fuel tank capacity in lower temps. Another great reason for sending owners manuals to folks waiting for their Prius. I sat right down, and read mine like a Stephen King novel.
Mitch

I tend to agree with priusman. As great and convenient a tool the dealers are- you can't fully rely on all the answers found there....most of the time they're reasonably accurate....but this car, as you know, is a different animal from anything They have sold. If there ever was a car that the manual should be read by the dealer network it's this one.
Had my CD player installed and asked for the headlights to be adjusted. I could tell if the person in front of me had dandruff or not because my lights were to high. Dealer said my lights were new "spread beam technology" and not ajustable. They actually printed this on the work order! Three trips later they adjusted them, and one trip after that to a non Toyota autobody shop to fix what the dealer had done, my headlights were finally doing what they were designed for. The dealers are getting allot of mileage out of "Well that's new hybrid technology"
Dealers are still hooking up cd players wrong?
This highlights the information problems with the prius and dealers to date. The brainstorming on the net and your clarifications are our only reliable source of information, period. It's pretty amazing this is reaching European markets as well.

Thanks for the mileage clarification priusman. Averaged low thirties MPG (spill and fill) when frosty. Recently hit fifties for a spell and had EV all over the place. Shot right up to mid forties MPG. WOW! Finally had a chance to experience prius in its natural enviroment. No wonder warm weather people could not understand, they were spoiled! Maybe the "Battery performance" and "greater" part of your message should be in caps,
"the cold will effect your mileage performance to an even GREATER extent than your last car; engine performance, BATTERY PERFORMANCE and reduced fuel tank capacity in lower temps."
Charlie "Can't wait for THS-C, Where do I send my money?"
