How much should it cost me to get a new set of front brake pads and rotors? I took my car to my local Toyota dealership today for a routine inspection, and walked out with a significant bill for work that they said needed to be done. I know I could have gone to a Midas or Munro shop, but it was easier to get the brakes done at the dealership. How much should this have cost ????? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

I am just looking for a rough idea...especially if someone had this done recently. I am thinking a muffler place would charge about $ 400...but the dealership would run at least $ 100 more...is that about right ??

I think it's one of those times when it pays to get on the phone and ask around. I did that a couple of years ago on new brakes, and it turned out the dealer was the same price as the brake shops. It doesn't always work like that but it's worth calling around.

Hell if you live anywhere near d.c. Ill do it for $50.00 plus parts, all four wheels. I think average pads run about $30-40 a set and rotors can very by store, so your looking at about $180-200 for parts from a store. Why do you need rotors though, and most large chains will cut your rotors for free when you buy pads.

I think I got taken. I paid $ 500, plus tax, for new front rotors and brake pads. I was told the pads wouldn't pass inspection, and that the rotors had rust on them, and needed to be replaced. When rust is on rotors, can they be resurfaced, cut, whatever, and maybe not need replacement ???

Your rotors will have rust if you spray them with water because they're made of steel... all steel will rust. Rust will not affect your braking surface. Once the pads start to scrape the surface of the rotors, the rust will disappear. Quality rotors like Brembo will cost about $70/pair depending on where you get them online and pads will cost you another $60 or so. Sorry to say, but yep, you got bent over by whomever serviced your brakes.

Dealerships tend to do this a lot though, and they ought to be hung for it it. A friend was telling me the other day about a $500 brake job on his Audi, where they also tried to tell him that his fuel pump was going. He had a mechanic friend look at it, and it was fine. Jerks.
