I have 10K miles on my new Prius and was considering getting the cruise control add on. I use a good driving technique and get pretty good milage (at least 50 MPG highway depending on wind direction). Any thoughts?

Hi,

Had the CC from Toyota retrofited at about 5000 mi and love it! Would highly recommend as it consistantly allows 50+mpg (highway) and I get to use the footrest! FYI.

-Michael
CA "Prius"

My father and I tested mileage on his Prius using CC and not using CC. It seems that it's more efficient without using the CC. Based on what I saw and felt...cruise control is not gonna be installed on my Prius. My father lives in Florida and I suppose that it's fine on flat roads...but in North Georgia it makes the engine race a lot to maintain speed on undulating roads.

Michael,

I agree with the other fellow. It may be more of a convenience than a gas saver using CC.

We know that for rural driving CC is useless, but
for long hauls, and even urban driving, I am a mpg bar watcher, with my new Prius.... and use my
gas pedal accordingly.

I have had CC on two of my other conventional vehicles and it is very convenient and makes for a more restful drive. I wouldn't consider, however of installing one on my Prius.

Aside from that....when you have the AC on, you can improve mileage be keeping the inside temperature as close to (below)the outside temperature and still feel comfortable. That AC
pump will operate less this way.

Just my two cents worth.

Jon

Hello,

Thanks for your input on the CC question. It would seem from your tests that a constant energy (slowest cresting hills, fastest in valleys) is more efficient than a constant velocity strategy. The flip side is you have to add your intelligence and estimation skill while driving. My wife gets great gas milage but really tests the lower limits of speed on the highway going up hills.

If you are a good driver, I think CC will make no difference. If anything, it will hurt your MPG becuase it cant anticipate grades, or stops far away. I think I'll add it to my car, also 10k because the foot gets cramped.
