Something I forgot to mention, when I push the "on" while driving the green cruise light appears, then blinks a few times I think 3 times and goes off, then will not come back on and no cruise control.

The cruise control should be avaiable on 2001 models. GPS is not an option.

JAO,
its not a matter of it not being designed or programmed. The spec is not currently available for the U.S. market. As several club members have commented the spec is available in the canadian market.
After production installation will not be possible, and aftermarket installations will likely not have the sophistication to coordinate with the THS system and the variety of inputs from the 13 on-board ECUs. Usually such aftermarket installation could invalidate the warranty coverage of effected components. As stated previously,we are studying the issue from our side and acknowledge all the comments. I really appreciated your message as I am very interested in the Coastaletech CC. I would love to hear more about the actual installation process. Did you have to buy any new tools? Did you have problems with rolling back the carpet? How confident did you feel when using the tap connectors?

I am very impressed with your description of its performance and with the mention of the warranty.

I'll look for your responses on this board.

Thanks,

Kevin Weidenbaum
Oberlin, OH

I answered kjwcedar's questions, but my message was not posted. Since midas89 covered the installation process so thoroughly, there is nothing that I can now add.

If I were running Toyota Prius, I would adopt the coastaletech system. Alert dealers with customers who want cruise control should install the remote control kit for them.

In Message 6137 markles asked:

>I've got an '01 Prius. I hear talk that the '02
> will have cruise control.
As a FACTORY OPTION - available when you ORDER Prius.

> I've also seen web sites which sell cruise
> control installation kits. They also compare
> their kits to Toyota's.
Can't compare - is NOT the Prius cruise but an adaptation that takes advantage of the fact that Prius cruise electronics are already installed.

> A) Does this mean that Toyota is now selling (&
> retro-fit installing) cruise control into
> the '01?
Toyota (Thanks once again Priusman!) has made a "Prius cruise kit" (control stalk, required replacement brake switch, pre-cut shroud, misc. hardware and instructions. It is available doe DIO or DIY and, if instructions are followed, should NOT threaten Prius warranty: Toyota parts, Toyota instructions.
For the kit part number, look thru back messages for part number or do a search on the eGroups Prius board.
The Toyota kit can be ordered at your dealer or at any one of the Toyota parts WEB sites at a substantial discount. Again, try spending a couple of YOUR minutes to look thru previous messages here and on the eGroups Prius group(s).

> B) Has anyone installed one of these kits?
Still waiting for the Toyota kit. Will be sure to let everyone know how it goes.

> Is it difficult?
Difficult? Depends if you have, and can use, basic hand tools, can read and FOLLOW instructions and are comfortable digging into your Prius. Your dealer will $gladly$ install the Toyota kit. I seriously doubt that they'll touch anything non-Toyota.

> Does it work?
The Toyota kit is an "Official" cruise so it works exactly like it was designed to work.
As for the other kit - from what has been previously posted here and on eGroups, supposedly OK. Don't have any personal experience - can only speculate what would happen if the remote is dropped or lost.

JMNSHO tho...
Over 13,000 miles and STILL thrilled,
Bill Powell - NJ "HALFGAS"
(Prius: Just Drive It!)

Yes, the cruise system has been available since the prius was introduced in US but the parts to turn it on were unavailable and connections difficult to access. This was the situation when I made mine and the remote unit was put together just to keep from tearing apart the steering wheel (airbags), or leaving an unsightly installation. Of course it works like the Toyota system (it has too! It uses their programming) Yes, several dealers have installed my kit and have remarked, as has everyone else, how easy it is. As has been mentioned many times, aftermarket parts don't void warranties unless these parts directly cause a problem. If you buy something that says TOYOTA in ten foot letters on it and install it improperly, the warranty will not cover it or the damage you do. Generally, warranty problems will arise from performance modifications (especially for the Prius). I'm sure that there will be many posts about hardware or software changes to enhance engine and electric characteristics, (I receive 40 or 50 emails a day asking for this very thing) but this type of change can put your warranty in peril, as can improper tires, pulling loads, poor maintenance etc. I had a person come dangerously close to hitting me in a parking lot while just talking on a cell phone, so I also have reservations regarding the sanity of placing video on the display screen. I can't say that I'm not interested, but I certainly understand that I would be responsible if it resulted in an accident. Just look to make sure that the change you're making is something you are capable of, that there is adequate documentation, and use your common sense that it is safe. In my spare time, I have been adding things to my car which I believe are simple and frankly missing from the US production of the car. I like the cruise, I use the engine indicator constantly, and I like the trunk pop. I'm sure I will make more enhancements and again I will try to spend the time to make it simple enough for everyone else (creating a kit and documenting it so that it can be installed easily, without permanent modifications ie no drilling, no soldering, no cutting wires; takes considerably more time and effort than either making one for yourself or handing you a bag of parts and saying "go to it, let me know how it went!"). Originally, I build these for myself, however, I am listening to your requests and trying to accomodate them whenever possible. If I don't feel comfortable with a kit for one of my personal modifications, I won't tease you with posts. Enough already.
Enjoy your Prius
Dave

Where did you order your CC? Speed limit being reduced, sounds like a good investment.

I had ordered my Toyota Prius Cruise Control retrofit kit through Eddie Bell at Metro Toyota (http://www.toyotapartsnow.com/ or 1-800-441-3441). Accessories->Customize this page to your vehicle->Prius. or: https://www.toyotapartsnow.com/Catalog/Item.asp?Item=E855B30C5C5511D5A5C9006008C\ 5EFEE
$175 total, including S/H, no tax charged.

Carson Toyota in CA will also ship the kit to you for $175. http://www.carsontoyota.com/ or http://www.newtoyotaparts.com/

Installed it myself (with help from Sam and Graham from the Group list). It took about 1.5 hours, and that included time for us to chat and take pictures.
http://www.kluge.net/~felicity/pics/index.php?group=2
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius/message/20119

T\ he cruise works great. It's perfect for driving down backroad highways, as the Cruise control will set down to around 25 MPH. Depending on your driving style, you may see improved MPG using cruise control, or you may not...

Enjoyed your pictures. Could you explain the ODB-II port. (For example: 1) What sort of connection cable is required? 2) What sort of software? 3) The type of information you are able to obtain? 4) Are you able to modify the programming?)

Thanks in advance and regards,

Steve Waters

<shrug> beats me, it's not on my car. ;-) The photo of the laptop connected to the ODB-II port was of Graham Davies car. I think I recall Graham showing us graphical printouts of the rpm of the engine/motor and the speed of the vehicle, taken from the port.

He might have info on his web site (I haven't checked), http://www.channel1.com/users/graham/MyToyotaPrius/PriusFrames.htm</a\ >

Also, check in with the PriusMods (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PriusMods/ ) or the Prius Technical Stuff (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Prius_Technical_Stuff/ ) Groups. They probably have the info you want.

More cruise control info:

The directions that come with the Toyota 2001 Prius cruise control retrofit kit are pretty good. Be sure to read them through first before starting anything.

I have heard of at least one case of the 2001 CC retrofit kit being used on a 2002, so go ahead if you forgot to order CC for your 2002.

Also, there's a lot of information about self-installs over on the Groups site, mainly during the summer (2001). Use the search feature, and wade a bit back in time...

For a wealth of cruise control info, do check out John, Kelly, & Mark's pages. They did a really great write-up on how to do it yourself, back when Toyota didn't have a retrofit kit available. Good info on tools and "the killer nut" (the brake switch). http://www.glyphic.com/ozone/prius/

Also, the Group has a folder and bookmarks dedicated to the subject:
<a href=http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius/files/Aftermarket%20products%20f\ or%20Prius/Cruise%20control/ target=new>http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius/files/Aftermarket%20produc\ ts%20for%20 Prius/Cruise%20control/
<a href=http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius/links/FAQ_s_000973373272/Cruise_\ _Control__000985525257/ target=new>http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius/links/FAQ_s_000973373272/C\ ruise__Cont rol__000985525257/

The "TwoHourCruiseControl.pdf" is also useful.

OBD-II is a fantastic computerized diagnostic protocol. I use a PST-500 which is ideal. Check:
http://www.interro.com/pst500.htm
