Are you driving an FJ40? Does it come from the
rear end?

It could very well be a loose pinion
nut in the rear differential. Undo the four bolts
that hold the rear drive shaft to the rear diff
(rather, remove three, and let the 4th act as a pivot
point to swing the drive shaft down & out of the way)
so you can inside the diff. I put a DROP of LokTite
on the fringe & pinion arm then sinch the nut up so
it won't come loose again.

A friend of mine
had a '74 for about 10 years, and every year he'd be
digging into the rear diff to tighten that
nut.

The thing with LokTite - make sure you're ready to
commit to tightening that nut down because the only way
I know of to break that seal is with
heat.

If you don't tighten that nut, it could wind up
bouncing about in there and tearing up the bearings &
seals.

Good luck, & happy holidays.

Peace,
Jake
