I'm getting my van on Wednesday> I was just quoted that my light mod will be $1200 - 1500 here in Vancouver to comply with safety. Does anyone know of a cheaper option. I really can't afford that much after getting the van and buying new tires. HELP!!! Thanks!

Sorry to break it to you but your in for an expensive job to convert a Hiace to "legal" Canadian spec. Phone around for a quote to buy the cheap garbage conversion kit for the headlights/grill. You gotta ditch the beauty stockers and get sealed beams instead and re-wire the whole works, day time running light module etc etc. There is no other way AFAIK and a decent shop will charge several hours. PLus, you might need a front windshield to get the Euro e code - add another $500+/-. It is worth it in the end but it is a **** of a job.

hi we just went through that, got our new van on the road two days ago. we have the headlight kit you need. happy to sell it to you as we don't need it any more. daytime running lights cost about 40 from cdn tire. new tires cost us under 400. it is getting expensive on this side but still worth it. you also need a third brake light, we got ours from lordco with the reflective stickers for around 50. the glass and lens should all be fine. please email me if you are interested in the front light conversion kit. i paid 300 for it and will sell it on for 275. we used it for a week.
thanks

Wow... I'm sure it is worth it in the end. You lost me at the beaty stockers and get sealed beams. Is that the lights? Why does it need re-wiring?. I hope I get through without changing the windshield. Thanks piles. this helps tonnes.

Breadman - posts like yours above are good ammo for folks in authority/insurance type positions to crack down / ban japan imports and or the inspection process.

25evaJ - Beauty stockers = stock headlights - they have to be replaced with rectangular sealed beams with LHD beam pattern. Our Hiace did not have an e-code windshield the inspector called it and I had to replace it, your situation might be different. On tires - note that the HIAces gross weight exceeds many normal passenger tires load rating. The only tire I was able to find wit load rating c (I think) was BFG All Terrain light truck tire and they have been awesome. Cost me $1000 for the set. Personal choice, but your life rides on them.
Nuff said, just trying to be helpful...
Good LUck!

Good LUck!

I have Michelin HydroEdge tires: 1653 lbs load rating. So if I multiply that by 4: 6612lbs. That should be plenty. Thanks for your help> I get the van tonight so I might have some more questions to meet compliance.

Yeah... Turbo diesel... Yesterday was a nightmare picking it up at WWL. My mom's timing belt went out when we were boosting the van. [Does anyone know why the batteries are all drained?] So I had to call two tow trucks. Both of our vehicles are at my mechanic. Fortunately, he worked in Japan for 7 years and knows toyotas inside and out, even JDMs... He's installing daytime running lights, light kit and seeing what we have to do with the battery.

Thanks everyone for the help. I'll let you know what happens on Monday with the safety inspection.

Oh... original title of this topic was having custom lights for 1993 Hiace.

I changed the head lights in my old 1992 Hiace to those with bright cover.

It made the van look more new and how to say... bright (IMG:style_emoticons/default/banana.gif)

You WILL NOT require a third brakelight.

This is unecessary to pass a safety in Alberta.

I have a 1992 Hiace camper for 1 year and my friends who imports cars from Japan dealt with the security check for me in Quebec.

He used "EUROLITE, Headlamp Beam Adapters" which is sold for about $ 20.00, ther made to fit the vehicle from England that travel to France and elsewhere in Europe to comply on the roads left-hand drive car.
Her is the address, I suposes that if these adapters are legal in Europe, should be legal at home in Canada.
