Not normal, but not uncommon for a high mileage engine. Most of the time it's due to high carbon buildup in the cylinders. Bad fuel can cause this. The carbon will get hot and light the fuel instead of the sparkplug. Not much you can do to solve this next to taking off the heads and cleaning everything off. Also, look up "engine water torcher" in google.

It could also be too hot of a spark plugs. The wrong ones can also get too hot and do the same thing. Try using plugs with a lower heat range.
