Can anyone provide step-by-step removal and installation instructions for cv complete assembly (left and right) for a 1988 Corolla sedan 1.6L? The passenger side is click, click, click when turning and the outboard boot is gone. I understand that means replacement time. The driver side looks alright but I plan to replace anyway. I have been told that some special tools are needed, but some internet research says that this cv project is for do-it-yourselfers. Any potential snags or problems would really be appreciated. Thanks for any replies.

Go to the local library and get some photocopies of the instructions from a service manual.

I've never changed halfshafts on a Corolla, but in general:
1. Raise the front on jackstands
2. Remove the front wheels
3. Remove the big nut in the center (probably will have to go buy a big socket).
4. Disassemble the bottom nut so you can separate the control arm from the strut
4a. You may have to take the sway bar loose at the ends
4b. You might have to take the brake apart. ...can't remember
5. Pull out on the brake/hub assembly while pressing the axle shaft inward until the shaft is out of the hub
6. pry gently between the transmission and the CV joint with two big screwdrivers until the shaft pops out of the transmission
6a. Catch the oil that comes out the hole
6b. The shafts are generally held in by a spring clip, so once you unseat that, they slide right out.
6c. Use one screwdriver on either side of the shaft, so you're prying the shaft straight out of the transaxle.
6d. A slide hammer would probably work really great, but I've never used one.
7. install new halfshafts in reverse order; oil up the spring clip and the seal surface to make them go in easier.
8. Consider new seals where the shafts go in the transmission.
9. Top off trans oil

It's been a few years since I've done it, but that's the general idea. It's a whole lot easier to change the shafts than to replace the boots. If your boot is split, I'd change the whole thing, even if it isn't clicking yet.
