I just bought a 96 Toyota Tacoma 2wd 2.4L extra cab with at 5 speed. When i put the emergenyc brake off the light on the dash turns off but as soon as I accelerate it comes back on. I noticed that the brake lever can move a little bit and when i push on it the light goes off. My question is does anyone know how to make the emergency brake keep the light off, I assume something has worn out here and this may be quite simple. I have checked the brake fluid and it is definitly the lever not keeping the little button pressed under the dash board that is my problem

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I think there is some sort of sensor that is behind the handle. If you say that when you jiggle the handle the light goes off then that would be the culprit, if not check to make sure the brake fluid level is at the MAX mark or a little above it.

I know that on the older trucks and SUVs you could adjust the parking brake lever. It might be that it just needs to be adjusted...

parking brakes pull a cable to a lever under the drivers side along the frame. I have had to down rig the system and disassemble the lever and return spring. clean the rust and grime off the parts and reassemble using white lithium grease or antisieze on pivoting parts. then tension the cables to achieve 14 to 17 clicks when the parking brake is applied. The problem was the build up of rust on the lever pivot shaft not allowing the spring to fully return it. I eyeball this each time I crawl under my truck clean and relube as necessary.

another place I have found rust and binding is at the rear wheel levers. Midwest winters are rough on under frame moving parts
