Does anyone have them? I don't, or I just can't figure out how to turn them on. The owners manual didn't help much. Anyone else having the same problem?
Thanks for showing me the light!

DRLs come with the Canadian version, they're optional with the U.S. version (although I think the Hawaii cars were coming with them). The DRLs come on automatically if you have them.

A couple of us have looked through the service manuals to see what it would take to install that option and gave up trying to figure out what jumpers need to be installed/reconfigured in addition to the DRL relay.

Anyone figures out how to do it, I'd love details. I would like to install this in my Prius.

Paul R.

I looked at the (EWD) electrical wireing diagramm for Hybrids with and with out day time running lights. The two systems are quite differently wired! I consulted the parts dept., and they confirmed my suspicion: vehicles with or with out DRL have different wireing harness. Unfortunatly i'ts not an easy task to add it to your Prius.

I think I read somewhere in which a person mentioned that you could just leave your headlights on when you start your car. When you turn off the Prius, it just automatically shuts down your headlights anyway...hence, daytime running lights.

Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, the headlights shut off when you open the driver door of a turned off Prius. The next time that you start the Prius the headlights come on by themselves. The only difference between this and DRLs is that the tail lights are always on.
Mitch

"When the ignition key is turned from ON or ACC to LOCK position and the driver's door is opened with the tailights and headlights on, this system automatically turns them off." --Prius New Car Features, May 2000 p.145

This is my first Toyota. I was surprised and pleased that my car was smart enough to turn it's lights off if I forgot!
Mitch

If the headlights are turned on with the key in the OFF position they won't turn off by opening the door. Only if the key was on will they shut off when the door is opened.

Yes, if you so desire, you can leave your headlights on all the time, and enjoy Prius' great feature that shuts off the lights when the door is opened. This will save your battery overnight.
However....this is a bad habit in my opinion, because if you leave her in this condition for more than a week you could come back to a dead battery. Apparently a relay remains powered up when the headlight switch is left on.

2001 Owners Manual, page 82: "If you are going to park for more than one week, make sure the headlight switch is off."

Sam Williams
