If it is like my 99 you can just turn them off like normal lights. If you leave the switch on the lights come on when you start the car but go off when you turn it off. To bypass just turn them off.

I did a quick search and this should have the information you need to disable them. It just involves disconnecting a connector. http://forums.vmag.com/suv4runner0600/messages/4343.html Ryan

Thanks, Ryan. This appears to be the solution. I'll have a look tomorrow. Rob

Hi - I work for Toyota in Northern CA region.
Daytime Running lights are not on the initial production Priuses. They will be available as an option later.
The only initial options are CD players and floor mats.
They are available as Port-installed options.
MSRPs are $70 for mats (CF), $335 for in-dash single CD deck (P5).
We are planning to add these options to the internet order site Aug. 10.
For now, dealers need to let regional offices know whether customers desire these options.
All customers will be contacted by regional offices when their Prius arrives in the US to confirm delivery. The port installed options can be added up until the time delivery is scheduled.

BTW, I don't have an answer for when future options will be available, but they will include
P6 6-disc in-dash CD player $550
GN Cargo Net $45
Cruise Control
Navigation
Daytime Running lights

Hope this helps

Well sort of. It's my understanding that Cruise is not offered on US models (2001) nor will it ever be available to be installed on 2001s. DRLs on the other hand are a listed feature. Is it your understanding that DRLs may be an installable option on US 2001s?
Mitch

Thanks, fchog, for the explanation of the passive daytime running lights. When I rented a Prius for the weekend, several friends and I thought I had left the lights on because the tail lights are so bright in the sun. What a neat energy saving idea.

This is much better than the "always on" running lights a few years back. It was embarassing to drive through the christmas light display (in the Winterhaven section of Tucson) in a rental whose headlights could not be turned off.

U.S. buyers might be interested to know that the DTR on the Canadian model are not, as I had feared, those nasty little extra lights seen on so many new cars under the headlights. Instead they are just the headlights at a somewhat lower intensity than normal. They come on automatically and can't be turned off as long as the car is in drive with the parking brake off (if memory serves me).

One potential problem is that if you're not careful, you could end up running around at night with no taillights, since these only come on when the headlight switch is turned to the second or third position. The DTR are strong enough to be mistaken for the regular headlights, so you have to glance at the dashboard to make sure you've actually turned the lights on.

It would be quite feasible to drive around the city at night with only the DTR and taillights on (switch in second position), which would be a courtesy to others, if legal.
