Hey, I'm new here. Been lurking for a couple weeks. Hubby and I recently bought a 99 Runner (our 3rd 4Runner) and it didn't come with any of the original factory keys. We're wondering if we should have the locks redone. I got 2 keyless remotes off ebay and programmed them myself. They work great but we're wondering if not having any original keys could ever be a problem. Thanks for any input. harlydane

Hey HarlyDane, I went to the Toyota Dealer and they made me one key free of charge. I just had to show them the VIN# and my registration. They have a key-cutter that is set to cut exactly what the VIN# was programmed to... I'm in a small city outside of Charlottesville, VA, so I'm not sure if around you they'd be as nice, or if Toyota in general gives one courtesy key. Good Luck. I also have a '99 4Runner and have lost my keyless remote. I want to replace it. How do you know which one will work, and how do you program it yourself? Thanks! Les

Hi Les, Call the dealer and give them your vin# and ask for the FCC ID# for your remote. Then you can look on ebay. My remote is FCC ID:HYQ1512Y . Many of the remotes available on ebay (mine cost $26 total for 1) come with programming instructions which are nothing more than a hokey pokey dance of inserting/removing your key, turning key, locking/unlocking doors, closing/opening doors, etc. Certainly nothing that requires expertise or is worth paying $80 for. If your remote is the same as mine, the programming instructions are most likely the same. If you get a remote off ebay that doesn't come with instructions, email me and I'll send them to ya. harlydane

John, Thanks but no luck. The day we bought it (from a Porche dealer) we went down to the Toyota dealer to ask and they said they don't cut keys there. It came with one generic cut key. We're just wondering why the previous owners (it was a local trade) didn't turn in any of the original keys. harlydane
