Come on! Let's all be honest for a moment. I worked as a producer for TV for 8 years, and before that I was a freelance assistant producer. I had my working backpack where I had everything possible, and the first thing that was always with me was the duct tape, because it could solve any problem that could arise during production. And it also helped me many times with my cars. (I never used it on my RAV4 though, it was too new to need it!)
My first car had the keyhole to the trunk fixed in place with duct tape, as well as the right side mirror, and the back panel of the passenger's seat. It did wonders and it stayed in place. Have you ever used this fabulous invention to repair something with your car? Do you have a roll of duct tape in your car as a regular thing? C'mon! be honest! I will not tell a soul! LOL!

I used to own a 1976 Buick LaSabre that I paid about $500 for. Great car! It had white leather interior where the driver's seat had a split along one of the seams. The solution? A roll of white duct tape! Every few weeks I'd pull off the old piece of tape and replace it with a fresh piece!

We do not like to call it duct tape. It goes by 3 technical terms:

Army--> Gun Tape
Airforce--> Mach 2 Tape
Aerospace--> Adhesive-Backed Textile Fastener

I do carry a roll wherever I go...it's part of my tool kit. My 4Runner had it on the rear window holding the plastic over the opening while I repaired the door, and my vapour barrier inside the door is held on by this...well....Adhesive-Backed Textile Faster.... ROFL ROFL !!!

I also keep duct tape in my car. I've needed it many times, especially while camping. My son calls it duck tape just to annoy me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

There is another thing that I use a lot but depending on what, works even better than duct tape: CRAZY GLUE! I keep one of those little wonders handy to repair quickly tons of things! From my nephews broken toys to a craft in wood, and what was my best usage for it, to repair a stop light I broke once. of course it was a very careful project because there were 19 pieces to put together, but since I recovered every single one, I took the time to do the whole thing. I think it is a helful thing, but is very dangerous too. Has anybody else used Crazy Glue for their car?

No, not me, no crazy glue for me. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I can't open a tube without glueing my fingers together. I won't be stubborn, I'll gladly hand over the crazy glue job to someone else. I stick with epoxy glues or silicone, or if I'm having a bad day--it's elmer's glue.

I've never needed duct tape for the car, but I keep a roll there anyway. Like you, I find it fixes almost anything.

When my car needs something I tend to take it to the dealership where I bought it, point at the offending problem and say "Please, fix it". Then I pull out a book and read until they come and get me.

It makes life much easier and saves the duct tape for the things the dealership can't handle.

Duct tape is one of the best inventions ever. It's the answer I give if someone asks "what one item would you take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island?" lol.

Seriously, it's the most useful tool in the house or car.

Super Glue? Hmmm ...well in NYC it gets used for something else entirely. Say a car alarm wakes you up at 3 a.m. and just keeps going for half an hour. You look out and it's a big new Mercedes. You figure the owner has enough money to have put the car in a parking garage but is a cheap ****. One of the meanest things you can do is go out and squirt super glue into the door lock. Requires major repairs. A garage would have been far cheaper!

The only thing I have ever duct taped in a car was a colling line to cover up a crack for a few miles till I got to AutoZone

Now you see, I would never in a million years have thought about doing that with superglue. I love New Yorkers...they are the most inventive people!

LOL ...we used to sit and laugh (evil laughs) that the jerk who owned a 80,000 car who was too cheap to pay for parking deserved to spend a few hundred or so getting the lock fixed. Mean yes. But I like my sleep too lol.

A few years ago, my mother and I were driving from Arizona to Colorado. Somewhere in the mountains we hit a patch of (black?) ice and went spinning around and hit a guardrail. Luckily there was no one else on the road, so she, er, realigned the car with the position of the road and we checked for damage. Nothing major, just some dents and scrapes on the front of the car. So along we went on our merry way.

Somewhere in New Mexico, we saw something shiny flapping on the front of the car. I thought maybe it was a potato chip bag caught on the fender; my mom thought it was a mylar balloon. So I lean forward and squint through the windshield and deliver a final assessment: "No, I think it's the headlight." We pulled over pretty fast.

We only had to stop a couple times to pop the headlight back in, and hurried to get home before nightfall (it turned out later that the headlight still worked, but of course the alignment was a bit off).

"We'd have been alright if it weren't for that guardrail!"

"Mom, usually guardrails are there for a reason."

Now for the relevant part of the tale: we had no duct tape! "What sort of MacGyver fan are you?" I asked my mother. Truly tragic. Lucky the headlight had sturdy wiring and didn't come off completely. Hopefully now she's learned her lesson - always bring duct tape!

Don't you love those new colors of duct tape! I had to laugh when I first saw them but I'm grateful they're around too. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/460.gif)

Oh yes, the colored duct tape. I'd forgotten about that stuff. I have a leather bag from high school around here somewhere with duct tape accents. Some girl in my Advanced Theatre class had brought in black and red duct tape and was, er, decorating various people. I got a red heart pierced by a black arrow on my cheek. When I got home, I transferred it to the bag. It's still stuck, so hurrah for duct tape! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grin.gif)

So not only can duct tape be used for automotive repair, it could potentially also match your paint job! Inconspicuous indeed.

Absolutely! Duct tape to make things stop - WD40 to make things go!
I'm from the south, and that is like a mantra down here!
