I am considering the purchase of a used 2005 Sequoia Limited but was dissapointed to learn that the only way to hear the DVD sound was through the headphones. The dealer has looked into the matter and says that this particular DVD player model can only be heard through the headphones. I have checked with two other private sellers of 2005s and they both told me they can choose to hear the DVD through the sound system or through the headphones. I do not know the specific model number for the DVD system but the manual covering the entire sound system (including the DVD) indicates "05_SEQUOIA_U (L/O 0409)" on the top right of each page and "2005 SEQUOIA from Sep. '04 Prod. (OM34431U)" on the lower right corner of each page. Can anyone tell me if any '04 or '05 models with factory installed DVD systems can/cannot be heard over the sound system? Please help.

Hi,

Don't know about the stock system, but last week I looked for a aftermarket DVD LCd/player to add to my '05 SR5. It came with an RF modulator - just like the ones that some with aftermarket CD changers used with stock radios - that allowed the DVD player to play its sound through the car's speakers.

Up until that, I always considered paying the DVD through any car's audio system would take alot of work and wiring. WHAT DID NOT I THINK OF THAT?!?

From what I unserstand, no, you cannot hear the dvd through the sound system. However, can't you buy seperate speakers to hook directly to the dvd player? It would eliminate the cost have having the vehicle rewired, which could cause the warranty void. There are many ways to do, maybe it's something worth checking into.

I think this might work. One of my friends found a pair of fairly cheap speakers and he puts them attached with velcro to a cover that goes over the head-rest of the two front seats. That way, the speakers are on only when he is having the kids in the car and they are watching a movie. Otherwise, he takes them out. He avoided the wiring, since the speakers he found work with batteries, but also have an adaptor for the car. It was a fast and very easy solution for the problem when there are more than 2 kids!

I just purchased a used 2005 Sequoia Limited with factory DVD system. The DVD player volume can be heard on the main speakers. The reason for the headphones is that the rear passengers can listen to either DVD volume, CD volume, stereo on the headphones, while the rest of the vehicle can listen to any other audio as well! You basically have 2 independent audio systems if you want.

If you purchase the Sequoia with DVD and Nav one more thing I discovered which isn't in the user manual. With the parking brake on, the nav screen will also display DVD.

I'd recommend this solution. I've got two or three sets of computer speakers laying around the house that can plug into a regular headphone jack and need no power source. I've used them with a portable CD player, an MP3 player, so on. Plus they seem to be relatively inexpensive - compared to revamping the entire sound system, at least! - so if something horribly catastrophic happens (though I can't imagine what), they're easily replaced.

I heard you can only listen through the headphones also. Purchasing some speakers sounds like a great idea too. Also if you wanted to try to do a trade in or get another system that might work out better.

I just looked at a Sequoia yesterday. 2005 model and the dealer told me that I could choose to use the headphones or the sound system. I would think that all factory systems in the 2005 model would be the same.

With the DVD playing you do have the choice of listening through the headsets or the sound system speakers or both. Do yourself a big favor don't wreck the vehicle and put funky aftermarket speakers in it, trust me you can listen to it.
