Hi,
Im new to the forum. I have a 98 le with a 4 cyl. 180000+ miles. Can has begun to run rough at or just off of idle but will smooth out as rpm increases. Check engine light flashed a few times but went out. I saw another post on the forum and he or she got a code from AutoZone. Will they or do they have the means of doing this at all stores. I live in Ca.
Does anyone have any ideas on where I should start. I was going to start with the basic tuneup items first. Filters, plugs, and wires. Maybe thats what it needs. It is due for a timing belt as well.
Thanks,
Steve

Get the codes pulled from AutoZone, they'll do it for free, and then come back here to post the codes and then we can help you out better. Filters, plugs and wires would be a good start, but it might sound like you have a bad O2 sensor or a dirty mass airflow sensor.

I agree with the humanoid, LOL O2 or yea a tune up would be the start point. Check you air filter too If its dirty that is a good sign of possible rough idleing causes. .. Oh on a personal opinion, I wouldnt mess with the timing belt issue UNLESS its directly related to the problem. That is an expensive endevour if you dont work on your car on your own!

On the contrary, if the belt is original, it's living on borrowed time. I believe the replacement interval is 90k (this on the V6).

AutoZone, in CA, has stopped reading codes, due to a lawsuit by auto mechanics. However, if you plan to do serious wrenching on this car, or a future one, buy a good scan tool. Look at the AutoXray line. I have a 6000, and it works fine. Also fully supports Toyota scan codes.

Well heres the deal,

I took the car to a shop here in town. It ran rough all the way to the shop. I didn't get any codes from the tech. But they replaced the plugs and wires, air filter and cleaned the injectors. I couldnt be happier. It did cost me though, 489. Ouch. Runs like the day I got it. Sure I could have done all of this myself but hey the wife and I were alone for the day (IMG:style_emoticons/default/banana.gif) . If you catch my drift. Beside I hate working on cars.
