I took my Highlander to a mechanic today because I had noticed an odd smell up front by the engine (from the outside) and thought the brake pads needed replacing. To make a long story short, I was told that the brakes are fine, but I am leaking oil from the main seal at the back of the engine. I was referred to another mechanic, who said that the engine and transmission need to be removed and that it was labor intensive (about 18 hrs). He estimated about $1600 - $1800 and said that he had a lot of work and doesn't know if he can take the job. He said he'd call me tomorrow. I then called the dealer nearby and was told again that it was labor intensive, would take a couple of days and would cost $2200 - $2300. They said the part only cost about $80.00 and the rest was labor!

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I don't suppose I have a choice but to do the repair, but I'm thinking that can't Toyota not design a seal that's easier to replace?

Thanks,

Ron
