Hey All,

Just a quick post.... I recently had a problem with and just emailed Felpro about the rubber 1/2-moons they manufacture for the 20R/22R engine head. These are the wee black dudes that go at the front and rear of the head fitting up to the valve cover. In short, they are too thick and don't make a cosy tight seal. The Toyota 1/2-moons I picked up this weekend fit like they were made for the head... well, thats because they were. Anyway, I suggested to Felpro that they research the difference in the products and make a change in their own. The deal is, I believe that their incorrect measurement in the manufacture was the cause of an oil leak I had that would cause me to loos all my oil in a month's time -- and then more recently all of my oil in 24 hours -- what a mess! I have 2 mid-late '70's Celicas, one of which I'm restoring -- good thing this happened to my parts car and not my restoration car down the line, making a big mess once I've put all the work, finances and paint into the deal.

Anyway, just a tid-bit to let "y'all" know an experience I had and to suggest that you check for a tight fit before using the Felpro 1/2-moons or to get the Toyota moons for the 20R/22R engines.

CelicaMon

(who knows, I wouldn't be surprised if someone comes back and suggests that I ought to not have used Felpro stuff in the first place)

Well, the cam seals you mention from FelPro should be easy enough to chech, even the backones can be closely looked at with a mirror and flashlight, and of course, running your hand across it to see that there's no oil escaping. Personally I would just pick up the set from Toyota and not use Felpro. I know that mechanics also use a Toyota mechanics also use Toyota's black sealant to stop these leaks as you unfortunately experienced. Thanks for the input, it hopefully will inform others before they make this mistake.
El.
Go CELICAs!

Yeah, I was thinking of using that black sealant (its called something like FIPG or something) on the 1/2-moon that was leaking -- glueing it in place. I was told that would cause the moon to not get all the oil it needed to stay plyant and dry out. Ultimately I looked at the situation and realized that if I was having this problme on my driver/parts car, then I would have the same problem with the engine I've now completed for the restoration car -- and its all painted up -- I wouldn't want to get oil spewed all over that and the engine well of the car once it's cherried.... So I've gotten the Toy moons. The gal in the parts dpt where I piced them up instructed that you're supposed to put the black sealant (dang thats good stuff) at both of the top edges where the moon meets up to the flat part of the head -- a bit similar to how you're supposed to put this stuff at the top of the block where the chain cover meets up.

Other than that, just a note for the books, I got to Fel-Pro's www, and I had a hard time finding any email addy to contact the company with. I emailed the webmaster and one or two others asking that I be provided with an email addy of who I should contact or that my email be forwarded to them, and I am as of yet still waiting to hear back from the company.

CelicaMon
