Bartlett of Maryland is riding in style.

The
Republican congressman went to Frederick yesterday to pick
up the first Toyota Prius in the United States. The
unique hybrid car may look similar to other four-door
sedans, but under the hood, it's another world.

Mr. Bartlett noted that the car uses a small gasoline
engine that runs only at maximum efficiency and then
charges a battery when it is
driven. A computer tells
the car whether to run off the battery, the engine or
both.

The Prius is the first mass produced
gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle and is expected to keep the air
cleaner with fewer emissions.

* Jabeen Bhatti

service reports.
