Just had my first 7500 mile service. 1) Had to point out to service rep that service was free. 2) Reminded him of 5W oil spec. He responded that ALL Toyota car manuals specify 5W but that in this hot southern climate (North Carolina) they use 10W instead. 3) Didn't notice much interest in servicing my "special" vehicle and didn't notice anything other than routine servicing.
I am trusting the technology until the service folk get up to speed.

I too had to point out at the first service that it was free, the asst. service manager helped get it straight for us. Don't be shy about escalating to mgmt if you run into "confusion". Also I hit 6 months before I hit 7500 miles but they agreed that it was still free. On the oil weight issue, I would trust their advice but get it in writing! (to protect your warranty)

Im so sorry you had to go through that - I took my super white prius to ron tonkin 2 weeks ago - dropped off the keys - went to have lunch with my fiancee - came back an hour later - signed the warranty slip and was on my way. They rotated the tires too. You can go to different dealerships to have the servicing done - find one that is aware of the prius rules and stick with them.

best of luck

kevin
(portland, or)

I set up my 15,000 mi service yesterday. I asked for 5W30. They said that for here in Colorado it is considered 'extreme' conditions and that Toyota agreed that we should be using 10W40.
I think he is 'blowing smoke up my

The short answer is, THEY ARE LYING TO YOU.
On Page 206 of the Owner's Manual, it says,
SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for your vehicle, for good fuel economy, and good starting in cold weather.

If you use SAE 10W-30 engine oil in extremely low temperatures, the engine may become difficult to start, so SAE 5W-30 engine oil is recommended.

Did I mention, THEY ARE LYING TO YOU. Please post the name of this dealership so we can all avoid them.

I am Denver metro based and have had my Prius for a year. The guys at John Elway Toyota have been putting 5W-30 in my car. They have NEVER said anything about Colorado being "extreme".
