I have a 1988 FJ land cruiser. Yesterday, I noticed a discharge on the ammenter, preceding this, I have had hi/lo beam actuator (stalk) occasional failure causing total blackouts between the high low movements at night...lasts about 1-2 seconds, causes real thrills. And one occasion of AC fan continuing to run with ignition switch in off position...suspect a ground somewhere failing...any one have an idea how these might be connected...had to jump off the cruiser yesterday due to dead battery, was dead again this am...Noticed after jumping off that half the way home, charging was showing neither charge or discharge. Then, about home, (total of 7 miles) that the meter began reflecting solid charge position...this is flaky and will have to take it to dealer to sort out but if anyone has a similaar issue, or knows of any connectivity between the lights failing, occasional loss of temp gauge, and off/on charge discharge, please let me know, would save lots of diagnostic time and dollars...much thanks, Paul [font=Arial Black][size=2]

Hi, I've had my FJ Cruiser (automatic) for a month now & I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed any issues with the ignition. Maybe it just take's getting use to (I had a Ford truck before this vehicle) but for some reason I find I have to turn the key in the ignition for a half second longer in the FJ in order to start it. A number of times I've turned the key for what I consider a normal turn & the engine does not start. It seems like the engine has to turn over a couple of times before it will actually start.
I've also monitored my fuel consumption for the first couple of tanks of gas I have used, & I'm only averaging about 420kms per tank. According to my calculations thats about 17 or 18 litres per 100km (no where near the 13.5 litres per 100km it is rated at for city driving). I have really only used the FJ to go to work so far, which is a fairly easy route with only a couple of traffic lights (so not much stopping & starting).
Any thoughts? Is this normal, or something I should get checked out?

Just got my fj today and I only have about 5-6 inches of clearance from the roof rack to the garage.I knew it would be bad but didnt think it would be that bad. I plan on putting a 3 inch lift on it soon and I want to make sure it fits in my garage first! I live in a townhouse with a decent size one car garage. I really want to lift it but dont want my baby to sleep outside at night!!! Thanks in advance guys and Fj's freaking rule, I feel like Im driving a hummer minus the bad looks from gas conscious people! LOL

Hello, I cracked my passenger side corner bumper on the rear passenger sided

, how difficult is this to replace? also is there anywhere that sells them cheaper then the dealer?, or would someone have a spare that they are not using in new shape, and willing to sell, sounds like I need tor remove the rear bumper to get this piece off, and replaced, any help is appreciated. The dealer is asking $116. metallic silver, also any diagrams out on the net showing how to remove the rear bumper?
Thanks for your help

Does anyone else drive their FJ in a cold weather climate, having to deal with snow, slush and ice?
My 2007 automatic FJ drives me nuts in these conditions because of the anti slip features. With even the smallest amount of snow or slush, the anti slip flashes and beeps around every small turn or with just about any amount of acceleration. Maybe I'm just used to driving in these conditions, and do not need the computer to adjust anything for me, but it's really frustrating. When the anti slip flashes there is a bit of a grinding/clicking noise and whatever it's doing messes up the ability to accelerate normally. I guess I could drive around in 4x4 all day to avoid this, but in those minimal slippery conditions, I don't think it's necessary.
Anyone else having these frustrations?

Hello Everyone,
Is it true that you have to put premium into the FJ. I have read elsewhere that you really don't need to and that 87 is ok. Any input is appreciated...thanks!!

I hate it. I hate the ventilation system and how it does what it wants after I set it how I want it. If I want the recirculation mode to be on with the window defrost mode, that's what I want. I didn't ask Toyota what they think the AC should be set at. They should have no say. If I want to run my recirc mode with the heat on and the defrost/feet output selected, I don't think it should turn off 2 minutes later and I start sucking in the exhaust of the car in front of me.
Please. I love my Toyota FJ Cruiser to death, and I know this is petty that I am only annoyed by the ventilation system. But I absolutely cannot stand when someone else tries to think for me.
Does anybody else hate this?

Acetone added to regular gas. (Not premium)
I have been running mileage test over the past 2 months and here is what I have found.
My FJ will get
1. About 18 miles per gallon when I fill with regular. (288 miles per 16 gal)(Runs but noticeably less power.)
2. About 19 miles per gallon when I fill with premium.(304 miles per 16 gal)(Runs well)
3. About 21 miles per gallon when I add 6oz of acetone with regular. (336 miles per 16 gal)(Runs Great. Better then normal premium.)
4. About 19 miles per gallon when I fill with premium and add 6oz of acetone. (304 miles per 16 gal)(Runs well but no extra mileage.)
OK so you say only 2 mpg better is not much but I am also saving 20 cents per gallon on the gas and getting 10.5% better mileage over normal premium gas.
16 gal x .20cents = $3.20 saved on the gas per filling.
32 more miles per fill = 32/19=1.68 gals = $5.04 with $3.00 gas.
So now I have seen,
$3.20 + $5.03 = $8.23 saved with every tank of gas.
Acetone cost $13. per gallon which is .61 cents per filling.
I fill at least every week so I save,
$7.62 x 52 = $396.24 per year.
I keep my cars about 10 years so that is $3962.40 saved over the time I will own my FJ. Not Bad!
Take a look at this link.
http://www.pureenergysystems.com/news/2005...900069_Acetone/http://www.wisebread.com/can-acetone-drama...our-gas-mileageThere are some that say the acetone will cause rubber to swell and I am sure that in high concentrations it will but I am adding only 0.3% acetone to each gallon of gas.
As I know acetone will eat some plastic products and damage the paint, I refill a 6oz finger nail remover bottle and only keep this in my FJ. It is the perfect amount for a full tank refill and the plastic is for acetone.
For all of my testing, I filled at the same pump and did not top off after the pump stopped.
Please let me know what you think and if you try this let me know your results.

It is talk about how driving an SUV has a much greater impact on the environment
than driving other passenger cars because they have a far worse fuel economy which is set
set by standards by law and government regulations. Many environmentalist are trying to
get automakers to change the SUV's mpg... it would cost the auto companies extra money
so they are hesitant. What do you think of global warming and the impact of our
dominating FJ Cruiser which is a SUV model?

FJC Magazine
So, after much thought, deliberations, and talks with a few people, I've decided to start work on an FJ centric publication: FJC Magazine.
FJC Magazine will be a FREE 'download and print' publication. Other than the obvious saving of printing & shipping costs, this will allow us to have more dynamic content, while maintaining a magazine fit and finish.
FJC Magazine will feature articles written only by FJ Owners. This means that you'll get the story on everything we're writing about straight from the source.
Our rigs, our mods, our photos and stories.
The magazine is set to debut on January 1st, 2008 - but you can download the 2008 FJ Cruiser Buyer's guide right now. I'd like to thank Kansas Law Dog for creating the FJ Cruiser pricing spreadsheet, which saved me hours of searching for pricing & package data.
The site for FJC Magazine is:
http://www.fjc-mag.comYou can signup for notification of the first issue and download the 2008 Buyer's Guide.
A quick note on the buyer’s guide….it was proof read, but it’s not guaranteed to be error free. If anyone finds an error, please let me know & it will be fixed asap.
Enjoy!

I thought this would be a good forum to join, since I seem to keep returning to Toyota's every time I buy a new car.
My first was the Celica GT, then I got a Camry and tomorrow I'm picking up my brand new Black Cherry FJ Cruiser. I'm SO excited.
Everyone have a great day!!

I bought a 2007 FJ Cruiser last weekend. I test drove one that was fully loaded - lifted, tons of extras. I didn't need *all* the bells/whistles on that one, but I did want the lift. The salesman explained that if I had the lift done through Toyota, it wouldn't void the warranty. So, we included that in the price of the car. I understood that I was getting the same lift as the one on their lot. The salesman stated that it was a 3.5 inch lift (lie number 1).
After I purchased the car, we began shopping for tires on our own (cheaper than going through the dealership). I went with LT 325/60R18/D2 119S Toyo open country A/T tires and 18x9 6-5.5 Am Eagle 178 wheels. From what we understood, this would be no problem with the lift, except...
When we brought the vehicle to Toyota, and they had their approved mechanic do the lift, I got a phone call saying the tires would not work, as they were too wide and would rub the control arm. At this time, it was mentioned that it was actually a 2.5 inch lift - Pro Comp doesn't even make a 3.5, it was 2.5 or 5.5. We then found out that the vehicle at the dealership actually had the 5.5 inch lift, so obviously the salesman either didn't know what he was talking about, or he deliberately lied to us.
My question - if I had a 5.5 inch lift, would those wheels and tires work? The dealership is saying no, but at this point I don't trust them at all. Thanks in advance :-)

Hey guys new to the forum, infact I just got my new FJ last night. I have been researching 6" lifts for the last few months and im planing on purchasing one very soon. I was hopeing that one of you FJ owners out there has one with a Procomp or Fabtech 6" lift w/35" tires? I was just wondering what the over all height of the vehicle is with the rack or without the rack. I want 6 inches but if I cant fit in any garages might have to go witht the 3". I live in downtown seattle so parking is a pain, plus I live in a condo with a garage. Any measurments would really help me out! Thanks guys!

Other than the rack built by Ian for 4X4 extreme, which there are no specs for, does anyone have design specs for an exoskeleton cage rack running frame to frame side to side and front to back. Or is there anyone building such a beast. The plan is to protect the body, the stupid stick out lights, the mirrors and provide a winch mountable bush bar rather than replace the plastic bumper. Kirk

When I discovered my new fj has no drain plugs like the fj40 did, I went right to the dealer to have some installed only to discover they don't do drain plugs and that I would void my rust warranty if I went ahead and installed my own. I honestly assumed that all that plastic on the floors and the waterproof seats were part of the same wash out concept. I may still go ahead and do it - any thoughts. Kirk

Looking at the little fj bolt on hitch sold by toyota, I wonder at it doing the job. it uses the rear box beam to provide the strength. I have to wonder what pounding through the bush and back roads with a trailer will do to that beam. I have seen 4 runner frames crack just behind the rear axle from just such abuse. The after market hitch from Reese or draw tight stretches between the two side beams and bolts on as well providing an additional cross beam to take the abuse and if failure should occur not total that rear beam. I'm so new, I'm still running on my first tank of fuel that the Dealer supplied.
The Dealer told me I would have no problem running my FJ on regular unleaded
gasoline, but noticed that the Owners Manual says to use premium unleaded.
Which is it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Here's a serious review on the 2007 FJ Cruiser. And when I say serious, I mean every detail, from design to performance and features, driving tests, history, etc.
The only disadvantage is that it's 6 pages long, so you might wanna grab a coffee :)
You can also find a big picture gallery and some FJ Cruiser films showing it in action.
This is a must see for any fan, so enjoy :)
The review is on TopSpeed, here:

I just had my new FJ Cruiser in for the 1st servicing and asked that the transmission fluid be check. When shifting there is a slight noise like it might be low on fluid. The dealer told me that they were not allowed to check or service the transmission fluid. The dealer went on to say that the fluid is never to be changed or checked or added to for the life of the car. s10.gif
Does anyone know if this is true, or am I getting wrong info from my dealer?
Thanks Brian

I have had several Toyotas before but this FJ is by far the most fun. Just had it in the wood for the first time at a place called West Ridge Hunter Club in WV. I am not much of a hunter but they have some great camping and 4 wheeler trails.
I can say I am a little sad that I put some minor scratchs on my new toy but if you ask me I would go back and do it again next weekend. This FJ when up hills that were for 4 wheels only. Through some holes that had hung up some mud only machines with 27" clearance. It really made me proud.
I am looking for some others that want to meet for some runs close to Louisville Ky.
