I just returned from a vacation to the New England states and the local Toyota dealer was inspecting 95-00 tacomas for frame corrosion. The issue made front page on the local paper. It appears that Toyota is in the process of buying back trucks that fail the inspection at 150% of Kelly Blue book retail for the given year. These trucks will be scraped. This dealer had over 100 local trucks already repurchased and awaiting the crusher. Is this a local issue for high salt use areas or is it a full blown recall? Anybody hear any rumors?

Full blown recall. Contact your local dealer if you think you have a frame rust issue and schedule an appointment with them ASAP.

I purchased my Tacoma from ebay coming out of PA. I find a lot of rust on the under body. If anyone has any more information please post it. My truck is fine and rides great but I always wonder how it will be affected with the rust.

I took my truck for an appointment at the dealer my truck hade no problem because it gets oiled up every year. and if your truck doesn't pass inspection they will give you one and half the book value of your truck wich is pretty good

I just received a letter from my florida toyota dealer and its true about the buy back. The rust is usually around the back shocks area and it comes from the salt on the road on northern states in the winter time. I'm glad I dont have that problem in Florida because my taco is running great for an 11 year old baby.

Get your truck checked (it's free) just be ready to get another vehicle right away. If you fail the inspection Toyota gives you a 1-time offer and once it fails the truck cannot leave the lot. So I would have another truck/car picked picked out before it is sent to inspection. I just turned in my 00 Taco with 150.000 (4x4, V6, ext cab) and got almost 16 grand!

I had a 1999 Tacoma that I got 3 years ago when I was 17 years old. I loved it. It drove like a dream and never gave me any problems what so ever. All I had to do was replace the tires and change the oil, just regular maintenance. When I got the recall letter in the mail I almost didn't even bother to get my truck checked out just because I trusted in it so much. But when I got it checked out at Toyota they said mine had one of the worst cases they had seen! I was so shocked. I didn't realize that so many of them had the problem. I couldn't believe that was the last time i was going to drive my precious truck i loved so much! They told me it was very unsafe to drive ( even though I'd been driving it for years and I was fine) but in an accident the frame could buckle and it could be a disaster. So right then they took my truck and gave me a stupid 09 corolla with no auto locks or windows wtf? Then they told me it would take about 4 weeks for them to have my truck appraised and make me an offer. I've been looking online for a new one ever since. I about cried when they took my truck but I know now it's a good thing because originally I bought the truck for 10,500 and they're going to give me 14,700 for my truck!! So now i'm looking for a new one. No matter where you're from it is worth getting your truck checked out. The people living in the northern states have a bigger problem with this. I live in Michigan so my truck had seen many winters. Sadly however, my truck along with the hundreds and hundreds others that have the corrosion problem, will be crushed. They aren't even going to send them to junkyards because toyota is afraid of crooked junk yard owners who may try to sell the frame to other people. So this is a bittersweet thing.

I got that letter in the mail, and thought nothing of it. Now That I ahve seen this forum, I just went and checked by my shocks in the rear and sure enough... there is a small sign of rust... I dont know if that qualifys. But I guess I will take it there to check. I would love to get a new Tacoma!! :) Although I would miss the "ol 96. I live in oklahoma and the truck originated in Texas from its first owner. So I would check your truck! I guess I will be taking it to toyota and see what they think.

If you have not heard, in March of this year Toyota launched a major buy-back program for it's 1994-2000 Toyota Tacoma Trucks (Warruntee Policy Bulletin POL--0308). A manufacturer's defect has caused severe rust on the frames of these models. The story made TV headlines

And it was also noted by the New York Times<br>

This problem is not limited to the 1995-2000 model years - many owners of 2001 and later Tacoma's are finding their frames failing, too. If you plan to buy or sell a 1995-2004 Tacma - GET IN INSPECTED IMMEDIATELY by your local Toyota delership (Free). If you have a post 2000 Tacoma, and Toyota gives you the "call 1-800-Go-Toyota brush-off, contact your state attorney general's office, the NHTSA, and the consumer protection board for your state.
