I have a 1997 Tacoma X-tra cab 4x4 with the 2.7 4banger in it. It is in great shape with only 65k on it. The problem is the frame is so rotted that I can see through it in places. The rear axel housing pumpkin is so thin that oil leaks through the metal. I have never seen anything like it, so much rust so fast on such a "new" vehicle. There is no rust in the cab or bed. Question # 1: Is this a factory defect or is this a common problem Toyota owners deal with? This is bad even for an east coast truck.
Question # 2: Has anyone out there done a frame replacement? I would like to know what I am up against. Hours + Dollars. Also what years/models will work as a donor? Is it possible to keep the motor and drive line with the cab (lift up the whole shooting match and pull the frame out) or is it easier to take the cab off and move the motor etc separately?
Question # 3: Can anyone recommend a good source for used parts in the Denver area?
Thanks in advance for your help
