How hard is it to rebuild an 89 non turbo engine into a high performance turbo engine?

ok here it is the non turbo motor has higher compression so upgrading to a turbo isnt the best idea. look for a 1jz motor instead...

1jz is the 2.5 Twin Turbo. .. it is the "1st gen" of 2jz engine.. toyota put the 1jz in 90-92 MKIII .. to test their 2jz later on. (I think.. i am not sure.) ONLY IN JAPAN though. that's all i know aboutit.. correct me if i am wrong :).

fellas i think the 1jz is the motor used in japan as a pre-cursor to the 2jzwhich the 2 stands for two turbs being house on the manifold.
as far as the guys in my club would tell you i dont think there was ever a 2.5 liter mk3 motor considering that the motor in my mk2 and my pals mk1 is a 2.8 so why would the toyota athers go backwards to a smaller motor on the flagship sports car. there has only been the 5me(79-81 supras,5mg-e(81.5-86.5mk2supras,7mge&7mgte single turbo 86.5-92.5mk3 supras(1jzgte in japan),and the king of them all the 2jzgte in the 93-97 twin turbo cars. the motors are as follows 79-81 2.8l single cam inline six,81-86.2 2.8ldohc i-six,86.5-92.5 3.0L 24 valve i-six turbo and non turbo,93-97
3.0L i-six twin sequential turbos.
any questions join up at nesupras@...

The 1jzgte is a 2.5 litre engine available in jdm supras. Some say it is a better engine than the bigger 2jzgte, but that is a different topic.

The 1jz gte engine was put into the mk3 supras sold in japan after 1991, everywhere else got the less great 7m gte untill the mk3 stopped production. the 1jz is a great engine, fits better into the mk3 engine bay than a 2jz but from the factory has the same power output (280hp), the 2jz may have a greater potential, but the 1jz is much cheaper and is still being made by toyota (in the JZX series of cars chaser, etc.) except now with variable cam timing. the 1jz has two turbos, they are small and have a happit of loosing exhaust turbines when pushed too hard for too long (higher boost), the turbine just falls off into the cat. with a big single conversion and upgraded fuel systems 400hp at the wheels is very possible and still very streetable.

on a different note the mk3 was also sold in japan with a 1g gte engine, a 2 litre twin turbo setup, later replaced with the 7m gte engine (more tourqe, stronger engine) there was also a suprcharged version, havn't heard much about them though, only ever seen one mk3 powered by a 1g gte engine (written off at a wreckers)

The 1jz-gte engine is also in the Toyota Soarer in japan as well, looks the same as a Lexus SC400 in the states,Made 91 to 2000. A lot of guys here in Australia badge them as SC400 and SC300s I am importing one into Australia :-) Rich
