I got a used 2002 Highlander Limited. But the MPG sometimes went to 8MPG and sometimes 24MPG.And a the low rate (8MPG), there is black smoke. I went to one certified Toyota mechanic, they changed all. From the strainer (inside the tank) to the spark plug and clean all hoses. And after that they cleaned the "Check Engine and VSC" displayed on dashboard. But the next day,I got the same error on the dashboard. For myself I think that this issue comes from electronic part which command the quantity of fuel to inject into the cylinders. Hope somebody could tell me more and how to solve the problem. Regards.

Well, if it was a certified mechanic, I'd take it right back in and say the problem still exists because i wouldn't pay for a repair that wasn't done. It does sound like a fuel injection problem though.

Depends, of course. You can clean an injection system out, but it requires a pressure valve and other equipement.

True. I have had great success with the gas additives in clearing water out of the system, keeping injectors and cylinders clean...etc.

While waiting for the repply, you could google the phrase "cleaning fuel injectors" and see what comes up. SOmeone probably has a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

Try a 20oz. bottle of Techron with a full tank of fuel and drive that till almost empty.

Then get back.
