When you say the back of the fuel injector system, I take it you mean the injector pump?

Common problem with all pre '94 diesel injector pumps are leaking seals due to the fact they took the sulphur out of the diesel we get here now, which causes the seals to shrink and start leaking.

Solution - injector pump out, dismantle, replace all seals, reassemble and reinstall.

It's a job for a diesel and turbo outfit as the pump may need recalibration afterwards.

I was quoted $800 two years ago to have my 1989 Hiace pump done. I flagged it. The whole vehicle wasn't worth that.

HIACE 4x4............. Thanks for the advice. I had started to take things apart myself but I thnk I'll heed your advice and take it to someone who knows what they're doing. Do you by any chance know a good garage in Hamilton?

Hmm, now that could be tricky.

I grew up in Hammy, but have been out of there for a long time.

I can recommend some good places in Auckland however.

There used to be a good place in Killarney Rd - on the corner of that and another street - Colombo?

They service diesel injection systems.

Have a look through the Yellow Pages for diesel specialists.

I answer to the problem with the new low sulfur fuel is to use some additives. In Canada, you can get it at Canadian Tire. About $6 for 100 gallons.

Yeah, that stuff is pretty much necessary in Canada, because it puts the lubricity back into the fuel that it lost when it went low-sulphur. A lot of them also claim to give you a bit more power and efficiency, some of them keep the fuel from gelling in the cold.
