Hello: just purchased a 1994 toyota pickup 22re. running rough black smoke. Noticed that fuel pump is running constant, no engine light on, runs great when accalerating. Idles terrible and hesitates and highway speed. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. fuel pump runs constant while engine is not running.

Sounds like a stuck MAFS. Take it off and clean it out with some carb cleaner. It's the flapper type and should move freely.

I would give it a carb rebuild kit for sludge in the carb from build up of the fuel pump ... possible cause for black smoke and rough riding ..

1994 has EFI, no carb. You can clean out the throttle body tho.

found out after much work, the fuel lines were backward. the fuel return was connected to the evap line, the evap line connected to the fuel return. Fixed that and ran diagnose, got bad tps. replaced that and found so much carbon in the engine its rediculious. Had to scrape it off the throttle valve. I'm sure this engine is carboned up inside, right now running 100% better with about every product that lucas makes. Going to adjust the valves tomorrow see if that smooths it out a little more, still has a miss. Probably egr sticking, if anbody had anymore ideas please let me know. Thanks

Lots a carbon in the intake? It might be black from a little blow back, but it should be clean. It might be dirt from an improperly fitted air cleaner. Removing and cleaning the throttle body inside and out would not hurt. If you want, you can do the entire intake.
Also check the cat and O2 sensor for build up.

At this age, replacing the cap and wires might help out with the miss. I am assuming you have replaced the plugs.
