There is a funny smell coming from my engine. It smells very smoke like especially when I start the vehicle. My brother says it might be the catalytic converter... but I'm not quite sure. Could use some advice.

Could you have spilled a bit of oil or another fluid under the hood? Sometimes it smells for a bit as it burns off.

My first thought was a bit of spilled oil, too. Does it do this all the time, or did it just do it once? Did it just start?

I had leaking valve cover seals/gaskets on my 97 avalon. you could smell the stink inside the car and some times see smoke. the rear was alot of fun to change. the car was worth fixing

Yes, I agree with the above posts. I know our vehicles always smell a bit after changing the oil and fluids.. No matter how hard you try not to spill it, you always manage to get a drop here or a drop there. If you haven't just changed it then maybe you should stop in your local mechanic shop.. Most will take a quick peek for free.

What does it smell like Angelic, other than funny? Is it like something crawled in there and died or is it more a chemical smell? :)

It could be your converter have you check the converter? All you have to do it turn your car on and push donw on the gas for a a minute or so and then look under to see if it is cherry red. If it is then it may be bad. And that may be the smell you are smelling.
