HI Toyota Fans,

Picked up a new Prius in Magnetic Gray with package 6 last Tuesday evening. In a week have driven approx 600 miles with a mix of 60/40 highway/city-rural for an avg. of 48.5 MPG.

Very satisfied, still learning the high mileage driving techniques. The NAV and JBL sound system are great.

Looking forward to making this site a regular daily visit.

Regards,

Dave

Keep in mind as well that it will take a while before the gas engine breaks in and gets you the best milage that it is capable of.

Bakemono,

Yes, I'm sure it will take 10-20K miles to break in. I put 146,000 on the Datsun 280z in the avatar and that included some road racing, approx. 1000 miles on various tracks over 3 summers. Wish I could find the guy I sold it to back in 1984. Would love to have that car back for weekend cruising/racing.
That was a great car. Now, driving a 100 miles per day, with the price of fuel, the Prius seems to fit the current needs.
Regards,
Dave

I really wish I could get that kind of gas mileage. My Durango gets around 15-18 mpg.. really sorry especially compared to yours. I don't think I could fit 4 kids and two adults in that little of a car though.. Too bad. I would get one just for the gas mileage.

I don't know what you climate may be like where you live, but I would be interested in knowing how much your mileage seemed to decrease when you hit the winter months? (If you have cold weather where you are.) I've found it interesting that outside temperature has as much effect on mpg as anything. It seems to me that the same rules apply to the Prius as to any car in trying to drive in a fuel efficient fashion. Enjoy your car!

Hello!

I still consider myself to be an extreme Prius novice (I've had my '08 Touring less than 2 months), but so far I haven't found any major tricks to good mpg. My understanding is that Prius' first goal is to run clean, and puts that priority above even good gas mileage - though the 2 are related. Therefore warm-up takes "much" gas in order to bring the catalytic converter up to it's optimum fume-cleaning temp. Besides just dealing with those factors that can't be changed, I've discovered that the same rules apply to the Prius as any other car - lay off the jackrabbit starts and anticipate your stopping thereby using your brakes less. Common sense stuff. I've been resetting the mpg computer at each fill-up - the worst I've gotten is 43 and the best has been 48. My goal is 50 (combined) when the weather get's warmer. Happy driving!

Hello All,

I wish it was not my first post but I have to admit that I am very disappointed with my 2008 Prius pk6 (magnetic gray). So far after 1200 miles all I get is 39 MPG on average. OK – some would say is not that bad but the way I’ve been trying to get a better milage – ‘eeeeeasy’ acceleration-less driving and long sloooow braking – the middle 40-ties others get seam to me NOT attainable and FORGET the 50-ties. I have to take it to the dealer AGAIN. (Was there already once for steering wheel off-center wile driving straight – but that’s a different story). Anyone can suggest a knowledgeable dealership in NY-NJ area? The last one I went to does not seam to be very knowledgeable. They could not even properly identify issue with the headlight been too low – I’ll adjust it myself – using info found at this site.

Regards,

From my experiance my Prius does best during less windy routes. A Prius's aerodynamics are streamlined for head-on gusts, but swirling and sideways winds can destroy high mpg. Tail winds are great.

Cold starts are always mpg killers. It gets the worst mileage in the first five to ten minutes of driving.

Check for maximum recommended tire pressure. The Pulse and Glide technique works well which has to achieve exceptional mileage, but is ideal for roads that allow 30 – 40 mph of unobstructed driving

They also look great customized!

Hey Whiteyprius I found a gteat article @ www.hybridcars.com titled " Better Gas Mileage in a Toyota Prius " It takes practice driving the Prius. I switched from a 2007 Toyota Camry SE v-6 and lived in the left lane and got 22MPG. Now with my 2008 Prius package #6 averages 46 to 52 and I now live in the right lane with the other Prisus's. Give it time .. Sgt Tip
