I don't see why people are so fixated on getting the "model" version of the gps. The ones you get outside of the vehicle and install yourself are usually better and less expensive.

I agree with Kelkat,

There are so meny options like navman or tomtom and I think having an installed one isn't a very good idea. I have a tomtom and I love it. Also I have two cars and I can move it from one to the other.

Great idea, switching it back and forth, but with the models getting so much more inexpensive you should be able to splurge on a second one before long.

There is no fee for the use of the GPS. Its just like using a radio. The nav system can be ordered even after you place your order for your car, but you must ask that it be added in a time frame prior to the production. There are certain options added at the factory (ie:GPS) and others added at the port and also at the dealers. If you've just ordered your car, you may have a few weeks to more to think about it and add, but your dealer can give you the details.

Regarding a fee: You may be thinking about the gizmo that Saab and a few other high end cars have (forgotten the name). That you have to subscribe to because (as I understand it) you somehow request help from a central location and the GPS transmits your location. The Prius unit is entirely self-contained (with the exception of the GPS signals, which are a broadcast service free for the taking).

The manual I have says that the DVDs are updated approximately yearly, but to see your dealer. I'm sure you have to pay to get a new one; how much is anyone's guess.

As to the detailed locations: It would be nice to know if that island you live on in FL was an area of detail or not. The map in my book shows that details in FL are around Jacksonville, around Daytona/orlando/Melbourne, around Miami/Ft Lauderdale, and along the coast from S. of Ft. Myers to Tampa Bay. Probably also the Keys. I don't know where your island is (though I remember exchanging mail about it a while ago).

Burns

Thanks for clearing up my questions. From all everyone is writing about it, I think it would be worth it. It sounds like a bunch of fun to use

On-Star is the name of the fee-based system. It uses some combination of GPS and cellular technology to let you get help from a real human.

Burns
