I think I would pay as much as $3K for a GPS integrated into the dash. Any more than that, and I would have to consider trading in the old car an a couple of years for a new one with GPS.

You wont be disapointed in it , Pete. Go find a Land Cruiser that has it and other than the buttons, (and i think a slightly smaller display), that's the one. To answer your question, no-you cannot change your mind without having to start all over again.

Jury is still out on if it can be done at all.(wiring harness different?) What's known is that barring some specially priced kit from Toyota- it would cost an arm and two legs.

I feel your pain, Peter. I have not seen the Toyota/Lexus GPS anywhere. I have, however, run Delorme Street Atlas on a laptop connected to a Garmin GPS II+ both in a car and on an airplane. Even if the directions suck, it's incredible fun to know EXACTLY where you are. And if the Toyota version has a whole DVD worth of data and a gyro to do dead reckoning while you are out of radio-sight of the satellites, the directions may be better than Street Atlas. I'm willing to give it a try.

Burns

When I went to confirm my order at the dealership, I asked several questions about the Prius GPS that the salesman (naturally) couldn't answer. He called down to someone at the port and was told that it is the same unit they put in the high end Lexus. Didn't look to see if he had is finger pressing down the phone hook as he was conversing with this "person" though. ;>) Mark

It seems Toyota's pricing policy has little to do with cost or common sense. Two examples:

1) The $600 steering wheel with cruise switch 45100-47021 plus the $44 two-pole brake switch 84340-32070 are contained in the $220 cruise kit 08501-47801.

2) The $4184 Navigation ECU 86841-47020, the $403 GPS antenna 86860-47030 and the $452 Navigation DVD 86271-47020, along with other parts, are required to add navigation to the Prius. The factory option price is $1900, which is comparable to what other car companies charge for a navigation system which includes a color touch screen display. The Prius already has a color touch screen display, so common sense would predict a price several hundred dollars less.

Also consider that a skillful negotiator will usually be able to order another car and, after paying the dealer a markup on the base cost, get additional options at dealer cost (perhaps around $1500 for navigation). Not so with the Prius. Almost all reports say dealers are getting full MSRP for the car and all options.

There are aftermarket navigation systems, I believe, which fit in standard radio dash openings and include both radio and navigation. This is a fine solution for cars which have standard radio dash openings and can be ordered without radio. It also helps keep factory navigation option prices from going higher still.

Sadly, Toyota can get away with charging $1900 because no known aftermarket system will interface with the Prius' built-in touchscreen display. Based on the pricing examples above, I do not believe the price is justified by parts cost, but rather by the lack of competition and "what the market will bear".

theboothsdad

Remember that they are taking a loss on every Prius. Perhaps this is a way of making up some of that. Just a thought.

I'm having the same twinges of buyer's remorse about having ordered the GPS for my 2002 Prius. I asked my husband if he thought I should spend $1,900 for the GPS and he got a big smile on his face and said, "Sure!" That's what really convinced me.

Considering that I was prepared for a $1,500-$2,000 increase in MSRP for the 2002, I can talk myself into feeling that it's not a bad deal. Also, there doesn't seem to be any way to add GPS later if I don't get it now, and I don't want to spend 5-6 years with the car continually kicking myself for not allowing it to live up to its full potential.

Barbara

There were several pictures of the Prius nav system in action at the GOHEV link on Prius Groups, but when I tried to go there just now MSN communities said that particular community had been perminently deleted. Anybody know where those pix might have ended up?

The pictures I remeber I believe were taken by either ee_of_ee or Priusman at the Gohev 2000 meeting. They actually may not have been taken by them but I remeber pictures of many Hybrid cars with either Priusman or ee_of _ee standing by them. There were also 20 or so good quality photos of different nav screens. I don't think I'm crazy, at least not about this. ;>)

Hi Folks,

For those of you who are considering ordering the NAV system, you might want to rent a Hertz car with the 'Neverlost'(tm) installed and see if it is really going to be worth the $2K to you.

I'm a pilot and I have a handheld aviation GPS, I've used GPS driven PC mapping software, and I've rented cars with 'Neverlost'. IMHO, the WOW factor wears off and the database goes out of date.

I'd be interested in hearing from people who really love and use their in-car GPS.

Just one person's opinion :)

Rick

I actually took the pictures of the GPS in ee-of-ee's car at the gathering. The way he explained it, it is very accurate.

Jim,
If you still have those nav photos in an easily uploadable digital format it would be great if you could post them to--http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius/files/%20Technical/ Thanks, Mark

Henry,
Check out the link below for info on the GPS. You have to join http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius which we call the "groups" site, but that's where all the action is.
Sam

<a href=http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius/files/%20Technical/Prius%20Navig\ ation%20System/ target=new>http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius/files/%20Technical/Prius%2\ 0Navigation %20System/

Sam

I guess you wouldn't need gps then. My dealer told me that to update the maps it will cost $100. I don't think the upgrades are included during the warrenty period. There is supposed to be an upgraded map disc released each year. ss dd

Does anyone know if Toyota (or someone else) plans to offer an option to retrofit a non-"DVD Nav System"-equipped Prius model with such and option after you've taken delivery of that non-"DVD Nav System" Prius? I couldn't justify the expense of Package #9 at the time, but would have loved getting that DVD/GPS option by itself. I know there are other GPS after-market options but as far as I know, none utilize the in-dash computer/monitor, which makes them less desirable, in my opinion. Thanks, Andrew in St. Louis (still awaiting my Millennium Silver, Package #4)
