I did a headgasket and complete engine removal and teardown in my 87T at 66K. It is not bad. The key thing is to make sure you have the head straightened, and check that your block isn't too out of tolerance. I had my head shaved a little and it really put out some power when it was done!! The biggest things are (1) Use the FACTORY head gasket. It can withstand more boost than the FelPro and it will last longer if you decide to mod at all. (2) Torque the head bolts in proper order (check www.supras.com), and tighten them to 70-75 ft lbs instead of the stock 59 ft lbs. This is key to keeping the car from blowing the gasket again, and it can hold the gasket in place if your block is up to 10/1000 out of tolerance (mine was 9/1000 and I still modded it after the repair).

Good luck!

I just joined, but i have been modding my 87T for about 2 years now. I am a member of SOGI and would suggest to all members of this club to check out their link from supras.com . There is a lot of good (and some not so good) advice from some people who live, eat, sleep, and breath supras. As far as head gaskets go,I must say that a metal head gasket is the best way to go. It will allow you to increase boost later without having to worry about blowing it again later. Of course this all depends on how far you want to go with the mods later. Do you want to go high boost, or moderate boost? There are some things you may consider doing since you have the head off; three seat valve job, port, polish, shave, larger valves, double or triple springs, ARP head bolts, cams, cam gears. How crazy do you want to go? Just my 2cents. If you wish to send me a comment/question/criticism feel free. I don't know the state of your cars but there are inexpensive mods you can do for them; TEMS, short shift, auto window up, shifter seat and bushing, shimming the wastegate(good to 12 psi). They do make a real difference. Ciao , Caveman Cam .
