Hey guys how are you?

So I have a 94 Camry LE, 4 cylinders, 2.2L. Whenever I turn on my headlights at night, the tail lights don't cooperate and they don't turn on. At all. Sometimes I hit the light switch and they turn on. The only time I can consistently get the tail lights to work is when I make a right turn signal, that's when they'll turn on. If I make a left turn signal or have no turn signals, they don't work! I got a fix it ticket for that and I'd like to get this taken cared of as soon as possible!!!

The mechanic told me it's a problem with the light switch and it needs to be replaced. He told me I can only get the part through the manufacturer and that it'll cost around $270. I thought about looking in the junk yard, but because it's electrical and not purely mechanical I'm worried that I won't be able to fix it on my own. I can do some repairs by myself but I'm no expert. Everything I've done has take me a while to fix. I'm a student and therefore pretty broke so I'd prefer to save money if I could. 1) Has anyone had a similar problem? How much did you guys pay?
2) Is there a place where you can get any Toyota part through the internet? I looked but couldn't find it anywhere.
3) How complicated do you guys think it is to fix something like this on your own? Assuming time is not an issue (I finish my summer course next week).

Please let me know guys I'd really appreciate it!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/liebe011.gif)

Replacing this switch assembly is not trivial. You'll need to remove the steering wheel and partially disassemble the upper part of the steering column.

One idea would be to attempt to remove the switch assembly from a similar model year car in a junkyard. This will allow you to practice, to see if you want to tackle the job, and also get a cheaper switch.

It's not uncommon for these switches to wear out.

I agree with the previous advice, but would add the following: Get a service manual for the car so you know what you're doing. Haynes prints one. If the car has an airbag in the steering wheel center, which I think it does, be VERY careful so you don't discharge it. You must disconnect the battery and discharge the backup cpacitor before you start to disassemble the steering column. Good luck. Hy
