Had this issue off and on for 2 years and finally the Check Engine Light came on. Had it diagnosed and it said cylinder 4 was not firing 100%. Everyone said it was the Oxygen sensor ($350 oem toyota ) It finally turned out to be the coil. $56 for the part. She runs great now 1998 Tercel, 100,000 miles on her.
I thought it was bad gas, water or moisture in the gas, maybe oxygen sensor, bad leads, but no engine check light to confirm my suspisions until now....god dang I am happy she is fixed....
