Hello community,

Since a couple of months I am the happy owner of a HIACE 2.4i from 1992 (III).

Just wanted to say hello, and at the same time ask for one question :)

My engine code is 2RZ-E, but my van is 'only' rear wheel drive. Does anybody know which gearbox mount the 4wd models and whether I can mount one of them into my van? I work in a drivetrain company and I am becoming a 4wd freak :P

On top of that, 120HP with a front engine and RWD it is too much of a drift machine (especially for a Campervan) and extra grip in the front would help me.#

So, hello to everybody!!

Salut!

Don't bother wasting your time or money on converting your Hiace to 4WD.

There is a lot more to it than just bolting on a transfer case or gearbox.

You need a front trans-axle that has the front diff, all the mounts, CV joints, steering rack, uprated suspension and so on. You will find that your van doesn't have any of the mounting points to attach all these things. You will be forever having to weld things on and make brackets to attach all the parts to.

Then you will find that there is no provision in the cab for the transfer lever (HI - LO).

I have seen a few people here try to do exactly what you want. They have spent thousands of dollars on parts and modifications and hundreds of hours trying to make everything fit into a vehicle that was never designed to have this in it.

Best thing to do? Sell your van and buy one that is already 4WD. The hard work is already done for you and you know it will function properly!

Also, bear in mind that the extra running gear adds extra weight to your vehicle - you will find that the 2.4 is not as powerful as it used to be.

Thanks for the advice!

I will do so, just keep an eye monthly on the sales of an old 4wd (without engine or whatever) and if something appears to be extremely cheap, I could buy a second Hiace and do a merge of both mine and the new one. Taking the camper stuff out of mine and putting it into the new "4wd".

I will post one day photos of it, looks pretty nice :)

Cheers!

Juanmax.
