Hi, a bit late to comment maybe, but as Austria is in the EU they CAN NOT tell you that you can't register and drive a RHD car or van, and it doesn't matter which law or paragraph they tell you there is a law on in saying any car that has been registered in one EU nation MUST be accepted in another, if they have certain taxes, like Denmark, they can levey them, but they cannot deny you the right to register an EU registered vehical. All laws are subservent to EU laws....Period. A friend of mine went through the same thing with Finland, they had to back off as well.
Easiest is to book a registration check with the authorities and when they deny you your new registration demand a paper on which it states the reason being it was RHD, then start the process of objections, ask them for the EU laws (not the Austrian laws, remember Austrian laws fall if the go counter to EU laws) which gives them the right to refuse your car.... If nothing else, wear the buggers down :-)
One thing though, they can and will demand you change the direction of your headlights which will mean you will lose your lovely looking set of headlights and swap them over to the rather boring square units with new plastic surrounds, I bought everything and did it myself, took me an afternoon and a lot of swearing, but it is very do-able for the average guy.
