Hi, I have a YH71 Hiace 1983 van.

3Y engine and all alloy gearbox.

however as I now only have 4th gear and reverse, and ball bearings just came out the drain plug of the gearbox....

I figue it's probably time to change it.

Can anyone assist in identifying the part number/type/specs of this gearbox?

This would greatly aid me in finding a new/second hand one.

Have since found a very similar looking on in an 81 Tarago - but hesitant to purchase until I know the two will interchange.

Thankyou in advance for ANY reply, even the useless ones, as they may not be as useless as you think.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of info on the net about what kind of gearbox would be behind the 3Y engine.

My best guess would be an L40 or L50.

Any gearbox behind a Y series engine (1Y, 2Y etc) will bolt up to your one.

I have since removed the gearbox and found that it isnt compatible with the same year of torago gearbox.

I seem to think it's a W56 gearbox from all research, but it's a remote linkage type, with the linkages at the side of the gearbox not on the top like the hilux types.

Pretty sure it attached to an l54 transaxle too.

I have been told that the gearbox it'self can be found in many vehicles but with different bell and extension housings.

so far everyone I have looked at doesnt seem to have removable bell housings, however, the one that came out does.

it also seems I have done a main bearing, and I may be able to kit it out - know any good suppliers for such kits?

Just for the sake of anyone who rushes off to research this for me, probably not worth it now.

I fixed the problem, I went and bought an X-Trail.

Found a suitable gearbox, but the alloy gearbox has the linkages on top, and a much longer slave cyllinder.

The extra linkage kit fitted ok, but the gear change was inverted.

The vehicle is rusted so far that it's no longer worth the time and money to maintain it.

anyone in VIC need Hiace parts?
