HI guys

My Hiace is running very rough, with lots of black smoke under load. It also uses oil if I drive it hard.
I've blanked off the EGR, so it can't be that. It's a 2001 LWB powervan, 2.4 diesel.

I'm in Ireland, by the way, and it has an Elsbett conversion to run on veg oil, but problems are the same on diesel.

Any ideas, please?

It could be a lot of things: injection timing, throttle position sensor, injectors not up to scratch. I recently changed my exhaust to a larger one, and now have less than half the smoke I had before. Maybe since it blows out better it now also sucks air in better. Black smoke is supposed to be unburnt fuel. The running rough sounds like it might be related to ill - timed or inconsistent injection. This is based on my admittedly limited knowledge.

Mine had a pluggged up and leaking cat and muffler. I beleive that created a viscious circle - it could not breathe right so it put out black smoke, which further plugged the cat

But it could be any number of things. If you can find someone who is good with both diesels and exhaust, take it to them and have them look at the whole system. I wasted lots of time and money having them look closely at pretty much everything upstream of the dump pipe. If I'd gotten them to look the whole system over lightly they probably would have caught the problem earlier.

Cheers,
-Pard

Thanks so much for the reply.
I'll be taking it to an expert early next week. More than one person has suggested I'll need to replace the rings, though, as it's using engine oil. This could be due to a "washing" effect, but I'm not that lucky!
I'll tell you how she gets on
Thanks again.

Try this stuff, a friend of mine had a **** of a problem with his London Taxi which has a Nissan 2.7 diesel and found this on Ebay, cut down engine noise and his smoke problem was as good as gone after about 600 Km (sad to say not his cigarette smoking though, that was still the same) The guy selling this has sold over 3300 using the same nickname on Ebay and has had only two that didnt give a resoundingly good feedback, so it cant be all bad.

And also, as recomended by some one else, before buying this try a re-timing on your injectors as I know that with the Veggie system it is recomended that the injection timing be adjusted 2-3 degrees pre. And if after all is said and done you dont get it going properly on the Veggie oil at least you will be able to tell yourself that it is only veggie oil and not mineral diesel you are farting out the back end of your Hi-ace :-)

A question as regards to the Veggie system, how does it run (when not playing up) in winter? I am actually looking at buying one from Germany.
