Hi All,

New to this forum so I hope someone will read this and point me in the right direction for some good advice.

I have a '82 Hiace Rh22 which I am restoring. The brakes are applalling, and have drums front and rear. I would like to upgrade to front discs, and wondered what other variations of Hiace will have interchangeable parts without modification to remaining steering and suspension.

My other option is to do something with original front drums, and make the best of what I have got.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards

Rob

Hey Rob,

The 82 Hiace is in the vintage category now, but an interesting project none-the-less.

Discs front and rear is definitely the way to go, but I don't even know if the 2000+ Hiaces have rear discs.

My 1994 Hiace has front discs and rear drums.

I think it would be a good idea to start with the front end, and see if the leg off a 90's Hiace can be grafted in there.

Once you've got the front sorted, you can think about the rear. You'll have to do some research tho and see if any of the
late model Hiaces come with rear discs. Failing that, you'll need to look at the braking systems on other Toyota models
such as the Hilux, Landcruiser etc. The Hiace shares a lot of suspension componentry with these models.

Grafting them into an 82 model will involve some cutting and welding I am sure.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi there,

Thanks for the info. I had considered taking a later model Hiace and removing the brake system from it. Front discs and calipers at first, as the rear drums will probably suffice for now. Unfortunately the local dealers in NZ are pretty useless and when I ask them questions about parts, they all duck for cover as it would require looking at a microfiche. If it cannot be found on a computer it seems to be too much effort for them.

'83 and '84 Hiace's have fornt discs which I had hoped would be a direct swap onto the RH22 model. I had not considered taking off a landcruiser, but this could be an option. There are plenty around, but at a high price. Breakers seem to command a high price for Toyota parts.

I will keep looking and keep your good advice in my mind. I will let you know how I get on.

Cheers,

Rob
