I'm new to the club and was scrolling through old
messages. I found a concern about high idle on an older
LS400. The first generation cars have an older emissions
system that keeps the idle high so that the engine can
warm up to increase efficiency. In fact, it is
beneficial to let your LS400 idle until the rpms drop to
normal idle speed before shifting out of park. Shifting
while the idle is high, as well as driving with cold
oil in the engine, increases wear on the engine and
transmission. In the morning, my 1990 LS400 takes up to 7
minutes to warm up completely. I usually just go out,
start it up, go back inside, brush my teeth, and by
then it's ready. I'd encourage all early LS400 owners
to let their cars warm up.
