g'day,

just a question about my horn that has recently stopped working.
for a while it sounded a bit weak and also wouldn't honk if we were turning a corner.
then it didn't work for a while but when it came back it was louder than ever.
after that it stopped and hasn't worked at all again.

i can't find much on the internet about troubleshooting the horn. we've checked the fuses and taken the cover to the steering wheel off to check the contacts but everything looks ok.

any ideas?

thanks!

must be a wiring issue if not just get any old horn from the wreckers and slap it on

The horn unit itself is probably faulty, replace it.

Now this may sound silly, but try it, tap the horn with something metal, and tap it pretty hard many times (by this I don't mean beat the crap out of it, but hard taps) I learned the trick from a relative many years ago and he said they work by vibrating plates or the likes and these can seaze up over the years and the tapping can loosten them, and if it doesnt work, bin it and buy a new one, brand new horns are often the same price as used if you go to a "everything for you car" sort of store.

If you have an older Yota it could also be the combination switch behind the wheel including the wipers, turns and headlights. An easy way to check the horn though; take it out (since it doesn't work anyway) and take two wires. Connect one to the + terminal on your 12 volt battery and the other to the - terminal. Attach one to either side of the horn and tap the other wire to the other pin on the horn. If it does not go BEEP, then yes you have a bad horn. Check fuses too, trust me, could've been a touchy contact inside the fuse.
