Since one of the members here has a family that only have white cars, I was wondering: how important is the color of your car? When I bought my RAV4 there was no Black available, so I chose burgundy. Before that, I had a flaming red car, and before that, a blue one, another flaming red and a green car. All of those, except the RAV4 and the first flaming red came to me as they were and I didn´t care that much for the color. Then, once I heard that cars that are red or black in some States, have to pay higher insurance just because of the color. Is that true? or is it just another urban myth?
what are your thoughts on this?

Interesting.

Here in Canada the colour of your car does not affect the insurance price.

I myself personally don't care about the colour of our vehicles. I just buy whatever makes the wife happy.

You can never do wrong if you follow those guidelines!

You know, I've never been asked by insurance companies what the color of my car is. Would they know by the VIN?

Hmm, I actually never thought of that... I don't remember if my insurance asked me for the color, but I think it did. I made the contract over the phone and I gave them all the info needed so I think they asked me about the color. In any case, I'm guessing the VIN would have the color of the car coded within... but what happens when one changes the color of the car? You actually are not changing the VIN number... How one can deal with that? Anybody knows?

Each VIN number is unique and contains a code that gives considerable information about the vehicle, including country of origin, manufacturer, and model year.

Having lived in 5 provinces, and having to re-register the same vehicles multiple times, I can tell you that the VIN does not identify the vehicle's colour.

Here is a detailed breakdown of what can be identified using the VIN:

Thanks for the clarification, Pongo. I though it did... But then it is better for the owner in case they want to change the color of the car, but it is also a bad thing, because if the car is stolen, then painted and changed a little, there is no way it can be found again, unless someone is looking for the VIN! And the chances of that happening are very hard I think. Oh well.. Thanks again!
