While I was living in NY, I had my car fully insured, with a deductible of 1000 bucks, but full glass coverage. I never ever had a problem, but I was paying around $600 every six months by the time I sold it, because when I had my RAV brand new, I was paying around $850 every 6 months. I still think that the charges on insurance are ridiculously high, unless you get only insurance for accidents and nothing else. How is where you live? How much do you pay? What makes a difference between 2 cars you own??

My '92 4Runner is $600 per year, with comprehensive and collision coverage, $200 deductible, and $3M liability.

I think that is good value, but my insurance is Government run by the province. Therefore profit is not an issue. With Gov't run agencies the big down-side is efficiency, but with the constant threat of commercial insurance trying to get a foot in the door...this keeps the gov't insurance very competitive. It is much like a co-op.

You folks should try it.

That sounds interesting! I would have to do research when I get back to the States. Right now I have no idea if there are insurances that work that way over there. I know in Germany there is like a standard thing with points and accidents. One of my friends, for example, pays only 35% of the regular price for insurance because of all the years she´s been driving and not having accidents. Another friend who bought a car a couple of years ago, and has insurance under her name for the first time, had to pay 120% the first year, now I think she is down to 95% of the price... If that is not a good incentive to be a good driver, I don´t know what is!

Well....mine's fairly cheap, however it is only for one car, and we have only the required coverages, nothing extra. I pay $216 a year. Right now, I'm enjoying this price (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Wow! That is a very good price! I hope I can get something like that when I get back to the States! The thing is I had full coverage, even full glass coverage without deductions... so all those little details add up and it gets really stiff price. but 216 is really nice sound for insurance!

Yep, those details do add up. I plan on adding things like that as we make more money. Either that or establish a savings account for car issues. I've heard this might be a better option, because if you take whatever extra you'd be paying and put it in a savings account, you can earn interest. I'll probably go with the latter.

Talking to one of my friends, the one that actually pays only 35% of the insurance price here in Germany, she was telling me that even with the replacement of the glass (which was 300 Euros) it was cheaper than having to pay full coverage for the insurance so they would cover glass... While I'm here in Germany, I stopped my medical insurance, and the times I've had to go to the doctor, it would've been a lot cheaper to just pay for it than what the insurance covered! Of course I think it is more dangerous not having medical insurance than car insurance... I think for my next car I'll consider the option of the minimal coverage and save some money that way. I just hope it doesn't get stolen.
