What's up everyone? I just got rid of my '96 Maxima so I could get a less expensive car. My price range is between $6000 - $9000 at the very most. The MR2 is one of the cars I'm considering.
Here's my list of possible choices:
-BMW 318is (slow!! but affordable)
-Ford probe because of its japanese engine
-Honda prelude (maybe v-tech)
-cheaper maxima
-MR2

So, are the MR2s, in general, high maintenance cars? Are the non turbos any good? are they all inline 4 cylinders? What are the best year MR2s to get within my price range?

I could use all the input you can give, thanks.

Scratch the Probe from your list. I work in the service department at a Ford dealer and a Probe is an expensive car to fix. I am talking $8000.00 for a new engine if you can find one. Having owned an 85 BMW 325iX, they are a fun car, untill the maintenance bill hits. My 87 MR-2 is a great car. All MR-2's are 4 bangers. I would get an 89 supercharged. They are hard to find because they didn't sell very many. Check mr2.com for more info and specifications on all model years. Good luck and happy hunting, Jim

Is the MR2 a good everyday driver? How do they hold up in the rain--in the snow? Are they comfortable or just fun? Are they high maintenance? What are all the downsides of the car? Is the non-turbo fast? I like the (I think) '91 and up body style. What's the best year in this generation MR2 (if there is any)? Thanks

My 87 is a great commuter car. I am tall and I find it it very comfortable and fun to drive. The only downsides of the car are a lack of serious trunk space, and it can be trickey for novice drivers, especially in the wet. My first MR-2 took me by suprise more than once untill I improved my driving skills. Grand Turismo 1or 2 on the playstation can show how a mid-engine car behaves quite nicely. The best of the second generation is the 94 & 95's. The 94's on up have the 15 inch rims and modifed rear suspension. The best advice I can give you is "DRIVE ONE". Pick the style you like and you will be hooked, I know I was.
Jim
