It's too expensive.

You're looking at
over $2200.00 in shipping charges (from Japan) alone.
Add import taxes, Title translation and paperwork
fees, storage costs while it clears customs, any
additional transport or delivery charges etc, and then
whatever modifications it needs to meet the US standards
(I didn't even bother checking all of those, but
every importer I talked to mentioned different
emissions standards -those can vary from locale to locale-,
different bumper impact standards, and many other small
things like changing over from all metric guages) and
you can see it's a losing proposition.

Then,
to top it off, Japanese cars have the steering wheel
on the right hand side. Which is cool, but could be
annoying in the USA unless you're a mail man. Furthermore,
the miles on the cars here are low, but they have a
lot of hours. they sit in traffic, idle, stop and go
for hours on hours. The brake systems are in constant
use and the transmissions are always working up and
down throught the gears. I'd rather have 100,000
highway miles on a car than 35,000 stop and go
miles.

I spent quite a bit of time seeing if I could
economically get my car home, since I bought it cheap and have
put tires on it etc. The fact is, it isn't worth it
to bring cars into the country unless you have a lot
of spare cash and are trying to get something
unusual just for kicks.
