Toyota Forums _ Toyota 4Runner Forum _ Wierd Ignition Problem

Posted by: ApwnInTheDark Jun 13 2009, 10:36 AM

I have a 1995 Toyota 4runner v6 2wd.

The ignition works intermittently. Sometimes its just a loud click, and sometimes it starts when you wiggle the battery terminal. Jumping it seems to work after a few tries.

What i've tried:

1. The battery has been replaced.
2. Replaced a suspect battery terminal. Cleaned other 1.
3. Checked forums for other similar problem.

Important Info:

1. Car does not stall once started.
2. Battery seems to be well charged, so I think the alternator is working.
2. When being jumped, seems to turn over numerous times before firing up.
3. I wasnt able to swap the starter relay because Napa, Oreilly, and Autozone didnt have one. However it clicks loudly and is not burnt on the bottom? Is it still good?

Thanks for the Info.

I'm betting you have bad starter contacts. Not sure if the DIY below can help you out, but good luck!

I've got a 86 that I replaced the starter, but seems the problem returned. If you've got a strong battery, clean contacts , it should start. After that it's ignition/relay problems to eliminate.
